I played seven years with three different teams and retired after the 00-01 season. I don't play any basketball now, other than helping my son's team in the winter. Unless I drive over to Milwaukee to play with the Bucks/Marquette, I really don't feel comfortable playing basketball with anyone else. It's just too dangerous and I find other ways to stay in shape that are lower impact. I retired a little early, but I was at the leading edge of a generation of players who didn't need to play 15 years to secure their future. Besides, my contract prevented me from doing a lot of things I enjoy like skiing, snowboarding, racing, etc... :D I didn't want to play so long that by the time I retired, I had used up my body to the point where I couldn't enjoy doing other things outside basketball. Guys playing for more than 12 years now do it for one of three reasons-

-they're extremely competitive
-they want to coach/don't know what else to do outside of basketball
-they've blown all their money.

Don't forget to send your letters into Street Heat!

That is one thing that I always wanted to know about pro sports contracts, do they let you do anything that could hurt you, hell, just riding a jet ski could kill you , so if you cant have any fun in the off season , that would suck.

Who was the nba player that played for denver i think that raced cars, i think he got into pro stock after a while, was it harman or something, and while he was racing he was still playing I am pretty sure, cant think of the guys name, I am sure someone knows who I am talking about. I think he is 6ft10 played foward. Does he still race, or nba for that matter?

I am with you Jim, I think 7 years would be plenty to play a sport like the nba, must be a fun and not so fun lifestyle, the constant traveling, which I am sure is fun at first but after 7-10 years anything can get old, and the perks of being on a team, I am sure there are some, and for the guys that are married , man that must be tuff to resist temptation of doing other girls, look at Kobe, cost him 4 million to get that one repaired.

Given the chance though, I would have played any pro sport, who would not, I would kill for just one time to have the anouncer calling my name for starting guard for the miami heat and 5 time mvp, just dreaming. :D

I don't know how the other sports work, but I imagine they're similar to basketball in respect to standard player contracts. There are specific activities listed as well as intentionally unspecific language regarding what we are not allowed to do. We can do anything we want, but if we are injured while engaging in one of these prohibited activities, the team is not obligated to pay our contract until our health has returned to what it was prior to the injury.

Some players have exclusions that exempts specific activities, which may have been the case with Tom Hammonds. If a team wants a player badly enough, they may be willing to take the chance that he won't hurt himself drag racing (Larry Nance was another). I've played with guys who had exemptions that allowed them to ride Harleys and of course Michael Jordan had the "love of the game" clause, which allowed him to play whenever, wherever he wanted. Everyone else is limited to playing with Division 1 or higher-caliber players, so they don't get taken out by some bar league hack.

Sometimes excluded activities come as a result of prior experience. When Shaq wiped out on a moped in Honolulu several years ago at the Big Man's camp, mopeds were added to standard contracts in the next round of collective bargaining, even though Shaq only took the skin off the side of his leg. I think snowmobiles may have been added to baseball contracts after those guys strung themselves up on barbed wire during the off-season.

Basically, teams would like players to stay in the gym and play basketball all summer, but if for some reason they're refinishing the court or something, they'd prefer we stick to thinks like golf, shuffleboard and other geriatric activities :)
