That is a pretty big paycut going from the NBA to working for a magazine.

Hell, must have been fun to play even if shaq did dunk on you , he could dunk on me all day for 24 million, and to all those people that write about you Jim as the worst signing ever , who cares right, as long as that check cashes at the end of the day or month, how do they pay in the NBA, monthly?

KInda like getting in the ring with mike tyson or holyfield, I would go 1 round for 15 million, I would try 1 round, and then go to the bank after I heeled up. :D :D

That is cool you got a shot to play in the NBA, that is a small percentage of people that make it into the big show. Something like .005 percent of the population make it into pro sports.

I keep buying GMHTP for updates on the Olds Alero buildup. They have a huge following, I see 'em at all the tracks and NHRA events. Plus they look really cool in photos.

Jim,

You only played for 2 years? I know some guys that played over in Europe after their NBA Bench career fizzled.....or didn't materialize.

From ESPN.com:

Here's how the Page 2 staff ranked the worst free-agent signings in history:

1. Raiders sign Larry Brown
2. Sonics sign Jim McIlvaine
3. Indians sign Wayne Garland
4. Orioles sign Albert Belle
5. New York Jets sign Neil O'Donnell
6. Philadelphia Blazers sign Derek Sanderson
7. Royals sign Mark Davis
8. Seahawks sign Nate Odomes
9. Hawks sign Jon Koncak
10. Redskins sign Deion Sanders

Thanks for the sports history lesson Jimmy....How's things btw?

I wouldn't believe everything you read on the Internet. Look around long enough and you'll find stories of me giving away new appliances and standing up in Gary Payton's wedding. Even the people trying to rip on me in this thread have trouble getting their facts straight :) I played a little longer than two years and did a little better than 24 million and while the guys at ESPN may think my deal was horrible, I was pretty pleased with it.

As for buying a Typhoon, I just don't think it's in the cards for me right now. I'm trying to simplify my life and I've been clearing out the garage a little bit the past few years. I did save enough room for a black SUV with a turbo, but it's a Ford.

And in case I forgot to mention it lately, GMHTP is always looking for more Syclones and Typhoons for our Street Heat section.

Man you are a cool guy Jim.Just jerking your chain :D
It takes an incredible amount of talent to even make it to the NBA,let alone play 6 or 7 years.I don't blame you one bit for taking what was offered to you.Not your fault Kemp was a crybaby.

Congrats on your pro career and welcome back, nice to see you here again.I'll be nice now. :p

Damn, this thread is making me feel old. I remember watching Jim play for Marquette, and now he's retired from the league? :-? Guess I haven't really followed pro sports for a while now...

Maybe I should send in some pics to GMHTP. My truck's pretty clean and might be worthy, even if it is black :D

Jim, How long did you play , and was it just the sonics?

I agree with jimmy, you need alot of talent to make it into the nba, but being 7ft tall does help a little bit, considering the average male is 5ft9inches.

So do you still play any ball, pickup games, hell you cant be that old, I heard that rodman wants to play another year and he is 40.

Myron Brown had a typhoon too.

If I made 24 million dollars I would buy a Typhoon.....along with 200 other cars. 8)

I played seven years with three different teams and retired after the 00-01 season. I don't play any basketball now, other than helping my son's team in the winter. Unless I drive over to Milwaukee to play with the Bucks/Marquette, I really don't feel comfortable playing basketball with anyone else. It's just too dangerous and I find other ways to stay in shape that are lower impact. I retired a little early, but I was at the leading edge of a generation of players who didn't need to play 15 years to secure their future. Besides, my contract prevented me from doing a lot of things I enjoy like skiing, snowboarding, racing, etc... :D I didn't want to play so long that by the time I retired, I had used up my body to the point where I couldn't enjoy doing other things outside basketball. Guys playing for more than 12 years now do it for one of three reasons-

-they're extremely competitive
-they want to coach/don't know what else to do outside of basketball
-they've blown all their money.

Don't forget to send your letters into Street Heat!
