Quick Ratio Steering Gearbox

Does anyone know what else will fit a Sy/Ty?
I have been told that there are 3-bolt,and 4-bolt boxes, and that as long as the bolt #'s the same they SHOULD fit. I would like to know for sure.

I would like to put a quicker ratio in my Ty.

Has anyone done this?
Thanks Scott

Well I spoke at length about this same issue with the gentleman on the other end of the phone at Power Steering Services and he said that it would be around $200 total to rebuild the existing box in my Ty to a QUICK RATIO box, I forget, I think he said it was either a 10-1 or a 12-1 ratio. Mine is coming out this weekend and going in.. Since day one my Ty has wandered like a lost puppy all over the road. So I hope this will contribute to fixing that problem.

Either way for $200 it seemed like a deal. I went to a local Parts store and had them pull 3 boxes off the shelf and I forget which was a drop in. Was a camaro or a Vette box.. Either way there was a box that was close enough to work but. It was close to $300/exchange.

Anyhow good luck and if you find anything let me know.

Any steering box from a '97 up S10 pick-up with the ZQ8 option is a direct bolt-on for the Sy/Ty's. The ZQ8 option is the handling package that includes a quick ratio steering gearbox. All that has to be done to adapt it to a Sy/Ty (or any 4x4 S10) is to change the pitman arm out to a 4WD model arm since the 4x4 arm is different from a 2WD pitman arm. Typical cost for a ZQ8 option box from a wrecking yard (for a 2000 model S10) is about $65-$120. I have bought two so far, one for $65 & a second for $70. Both were from low mileage 2000 model S10 pick-ups. I mounted one of them on my '93 4x4 S10, so I know that it works perfectly, and will operate fully from stop to stop on the lower swingarms. The other I mounted on an '87 S10 Blazer (2WD model). These quick ratio boxes have just the right feel on any 4x4 or 2WD S10 pick-up!

After scrounging local yards, I gave up and ordered a reman box from the Dealer. $200.00 and a core didn't seem too bad.
Hopefully this will solve the "numb" steering.

OK, I'm no where near a steering-box expert, so I'm going to ask some stupid questions. This steering thing sounds like a cool thing to do, but I have no clue what's going on.

1) What is the stock steering box gear ratio? How many turns of the wheel from stop to stop?

2) What is the proposed 10-1 and 12-1 box ratios and how do they affect the stop to stop ratio?

3) What other parts would be needed to convert a stock Sy/Ty to use the different ratios?

The ideal situation (for me) would be turning the steering wheel the least amount possible. I autocross a lot, so I'd ideally like to not have to take my hands off the wheel at all...

A. Ty have fixed 17.5:1 ratio and Sy have a variable 16/13:1 ratio. Info from http://www.syty.org/old/brochure-spec.html

2) What is the proposed 10-1 and 12-1 box ratios and how do they affect the stop to stop ratio?

A. 10:1 means that you have to turn input shaft (steering wheel) on steering box 10 turns to get the out-put shaft (pitman arm) to turn 1 full turn.

3) What other parts would be needed to convert a stock Sy/Ty to use the different ratios?

A. Some steering boxes are a direct bolt on, like the newer S-10 ZQ-8 package.

A. You want as quick ratio as possible for that, like a 10:1 ratio. I think the Camaro's have a 13:1 but don't quote me on this?

That's out of my collection. There are several steering boxes which will fit, "WS" seems to be the way to go....

http://www.agrperformance.com/agr/
AGR 12:1 steering box # 1161P
AGR steering pump #8545PT
Check for the angle, should not be more than 36°, otherwise you get in trouble with the bar or control arm.

GM Part:
"WS" box '82 Camaro. 2½ turns end to end
14:1 ratio 35°

Lee Manufacturing (+1-818-768-0371) Sun Valley USA:
Code/Ratio/Angle/turns end to end
YA/ 14:1/ 39°/ 2½
HX/ 14:1/ 32°/ 2½
FP/ 14:1/ 39°/ 2½
BL/ 17.5:1/36°/4½ (Typhoon Box)
XF/ 13-15.5:1/ 42°/ 4
WS/ 14:1/35°/2½

I've heard that the "WS" is great B U T keep in mind that the Typhoon will be very nervous with his short wheelbase....
