quick flexplate question...

so i've got some low rpm rattling coming from the tranny... once i get up over 2200 rpm it goes away. at first i was thinkin TC shudder and once it locks at 2200 it goes away... but the truck still launches hard and shifts well... so im thinkin the flexplate could be loose? i havent worked on a tranny before and that's probably a good think for myself and my tranny...

my question is... if the bolts in the flexplate are loose, can i get to the bolts just by removing the bellhousing? or does the whole tranny need to be dropped?

If you mean the flexplate to converter, they're easy. If you mean crank to flexplate:

Can it be done... yes. Does it require building a special 18" 14mm open end wrench ... yes. Either way, not fun to do but can be done. They shouldn't rattle loose though, especially if they're untouched. Mine did because my new flexplate was painted, and they could slip a little.

That's what mine sounded like when they got loose (crank to flexplate bolts)

mine sounds similar to that but not as bad...

it only does it when its in drive and i'm taking it easy... it doesn't do it in reverse, and it doesnt do it if i get on the gas... if i have time when i get home i'll see if i can take it for a spin with the video camera and try to get some decent audio.

I had this happen on my old 442. It ended up not being the flexplate to torque converter bolts, but the actual bolts that connected the tranny to the engine had backed out. All I had holding everything together was two bolts and the dowel pins.

Mine started out like that, but it got worse very quickly... I had driven it to get an alignment, it started as I pulled in there, and by the time I got home the truck sounded like that just sitting at idle. As soon as it loaded up the noise went away. Unfortunately, if it happens for any appreciable length of time and it is those crank bolts, it will damage them and they will have to be replaced (which means dropping the tranny)

Tell me about it... when I first heard that noise I was ticked off... the thing had about 50 miles on it at the time ... it sounded like the crankcase was full of rocks. I was so relieved when we figured out what it was.

had the same problem about 3 weeks ago. had to back-out the trany to engine bolts about 1/2", loosen the trany crossmember and slide the trany back 1/2". then i was able to reach the crank/flexplate bolts with an open wrench, backed them out almost all the way, applied the locktite and tightend them using inotec quickgrip on the wrench to prevent rounding of the bolts. took about 2 hours
