question about tcase fluid and coupling slippage

Mephisto

These trucks are cursed
with my propshaft out, the coupling in the tcase was slippin like a mofo. so i changed the fluid, it was pretty burnt up (no metal flakes/chunks whew!) and now it doesnt slip nearly as bad... can the coupling slip when the front prop is installed? also, im pretty sure theres slack in the chain, just from the way the truck shifts.

if you notice anything unusual about the xcase it's on it's way out. start looking for a new one.

The ATF in the transfer case is not the fluid used for the viscous coupling. The viscous coupler is a sealed unit. At most, the old ATF wasn't as good at transferring heat away from the coupler, and the new fluid is keeping the coupler cooler, so it's not slipping as much. Or something like that. The point is that you have a problem, and new ATF is basically just a bandaid helping the symptom a bit...
