Putting column back together... Weird issue.

So I'm putting the column back together and it pulls in and out from the shaft that the steering wheel bolts on. It's like some shim is missing or something like that but I'm sure someone knows exactly what it is on here. I'm trying to get a video to upload that shows exactly what I'm talking about but basically if you grab the shaft that the steering wheel nut screws down on it pulls out a little bit 1/8 inch to. 1/4 inch and moves around. When I put everything back together the steering wheel pulls out a little and wobbles around. I'm scratching my head on this one. Any ideas?

No clue but my first thought is, is the other end assembled correctly? If the shaft to the steering box is not in place could that be the issue?

Re: Putting column back together... Weird issue.

Everything seemed fine when I pulled it apart, but putting it back together is another issue. When I pull on the shaft at the top of the column it moves all the way down to the base of the column in the engine bay. I'm stumped on this one.

this is the video of what I'm talking about. Is it the dreaded 4 bolts located deep in the column that need to be loctited? The steering wheel moves the same amount when the whole thing is re-assembled 100% and the steering wheel is torqued down.

Any ideas? The weird star looking bolts inside the column are tight. The ones down by the tilt mechanism. I'm at my wits end on this one

will the tilt column out of a 94 s10 blazer fit into the typhoon with no problems?

Had a look at the video, something is missing for sure, either a bearing or something that holds the upper portion tight. Without the column in front of me it's hard to tell though.

The 94 column will work, as long as it's a manual transmission with tilt it is virtually the same other than having the shifter lockout cable.

Re: Putting column back together... Weird issue.

Have you got a large c-clip in the top of the column? Mine was missing and that made mine loose as well. If someone had the column apart before, they may have left it out.

do you mean the clip that goes down on the lock plate to compress the spring?

Re: Putting column back together... Weird issue.

I haven't been able to work on it in a few days since I have been swapping engines in 2 other project cars but I put it all back together and the only thing not in the column is the little plastic piece that falls out that works the high beam switch. It has no bearing on whatever the problem is, I just didn't want to spend the time to try to figure out how to put it back in so I could get the video up. Any ideas? This is with the lock plate and all the screws put in. It moves from the steering wheel all the way down to the steering shaft in the engine bay.

I'm just going to order another column and go from there... Hopefully that should fix the issue. It's funny I'll have 2 engine transmission swaps done before I get the typhoon steering column issue worked out...

Re: Putting column back together... Weird issue.

tossed a junk yard column in that had a tight shaft... literally got it in and it's doing the same exact thing as the other one, just not as bad for some reason. I've got an old timer heading over to look at it while I'm at work to see what he can come up with I guess.
