hi guys, i'm thinking about buying a ty again. first one i bought was local making transaction easy. my question is how do most buyers buy their trucks out of state without getting ripped off??? is there a safe and easy way to make private party transactions feel more comfortable from both sides??? i'm thinking ebay to make things alittle safer. any thoughts would be helpful. thanks.

I bought my Sy out of state. I first asked a lot of detailed questions, pictures would be helpful though, the guy I bought it from didn't have a digital camera. Beware pictures can also hide a lot as well. I paid someone local to inspect the vehicle. I flew in and check it briefly out myself as well, before I handed over any money.

Re: Purchasing Questions

When you find a truck your interested in, post up in the regional section and ask to see if anyone can go check it out for you in that area. There are alot of people here who will offer to help out and go see a truck in person if its local to them, just have to ask.

Buying a SyTy site unseen is a gamble. Some have made out great, others have gotten taken by false information. Pics are nice, but dont tell the entire story. Always best if someone who knows these trucks can take a look for you to save some time/money.

When buying used, it is always ‘Buyer Beware’.

For a fee you can pay an independent insurance appraiser to drop by and send you the results. They will give you a pretty good opinion of the structural and driving of the truck.

If you are in good with your insurance agent, he can help to connect you up to one.

It would be good to get a couple opinions if the price of the truck is high.

Just a suggestion that I have used.

Good luck.

Re: Purchasing Questions

I haven't traveled more than 800 miles or so for a car yet so both times I tow a trailer with me and pay the cash once I see the vehicle and it is in the condition the seller said it was, or at least very very close. I guess if it was farther away this method wouldn't be as effective.

This is the best advice. Both my trucks were long distance purchases. I did see the Sy before handing over the money, but not the Ty (it was in Alaska!).

If you have one person who knows these trucks look at it...great. But even better is a team of two (like Joe and Jimmy) who can test out the truck and talk things over. 4 eyes are even better than two!

Get stuff in writing...when you make a deposit - document it! Make sure the VIN appears on all documents relating to the sale. Write out the conditions of the sale. If they don't have title in hand, no sweat - just document that they will turn it over to you when the lien is paid.

Re: Purchasing Questions

I bought my Ty and my Audi A6 off eBay and the transactions went very smoothly, but every seller is different, so if you can't find good references for the seller (feedback on eBay is a decent, but not perfect, indicator), it's best, as others have mentioned, to have someone local to the truck go take a look for you. May save you a lot of grief. And what SyTy'er doesn't want to go check out (and possibly test drive) another SyTy????

Good luck!

Re: Purchasing Questions

Get someone local off this forum to check it out beforehand.....period!!! I bought a 92 prototype Syclone and Adam Auerbach personally checked it out. Truck arrived just as described and I was delighted with the buy. Bought a 93 Ty 4 months later from a forum member who was alledgedly in a bind. Truck was desribed to run super with NO rust. Took his word, wired the funds, get truck transported here and the thing runs pig rich with surface rust on both lower front fender panels. Otherwise, it is a beautiful Ty and I don't think I got burnt bad with the way it is equipped but I was not told the truth and eyes on the ground would have prevented me owning a truck that has accumulated 2 miles on it since I got it in early June! I'll get it screaming sometime but I don't like being lied too in the process and mentally recording those who intentionally burn me

Re: Purchasing Questions

I bought mine in southern Illinois, (I live in Minnesota)I got pics from Ebay, asked lots of ?'s, and drove down with cash, trailer, and gun (just in case :) ) test drove the truck (very important) although he had some stupid excuse about no insurance, I told him if I wrecked it I would buy it. After looking it over good, and making sure the title was clear of any leins, I drove it on the trailer, straped it down and then gave him the cash (just in case, again).

Re: Purchasing Questions

My best friend went to look a ZR-1 600 miles once was hit in the nose, tow a trailer all the way down and came back empty handed.. He was expecting an otherwise mint vehicle since it has 13K miles, and the owner had paid $48,000 2 years earlier with 5K miles. The pictures look great and my friend asked the right questions. Wire harness had a short and was a melt mess going into the interior among worse damage than described (owner lied about a few thing door damage, frame bent further up, windshield cracked) The car also had cigarette burns in the interior and prior rear quarter damage, neither which was disclosed.

Re: Purchasing Questions

One thing I would definetly do is plan on spending at least $1k on minor repairs, upgrades and a tune up once you buy a truck. Consider it as your own insurance on the transaction you just made. I will also second what has been mentioned about having a local owner check out the truck for you, especially one who does his/her own wrenching.

I would never trust what anyone tells me regarding the maitenance that has previously been done, receipts don't alter my course of action either.

If I were buying a truck I would change all of the fluids, check the brakes, do a complete tune up, replace the fuel pump and filter, all the common maitenance and easy repair items etc.... And I would do this before I started driving it anywhere.

Once that is done run it on diacom, datamaster or one of the other tools and verify that it is running safe and strong.
