Problem with Drive Axles??

im not sure if its a problem or not but when i bought my sy the guy said that the wheels rub because they are 18x10s on all four. so i was like ok ill deal with not making a u-turn until i get new rims. Well me and a friendlooked at it again to day. When i turn sharp the inside back wheel peels out and hops a bit. even when going very slow. i dont know if this is just how these truck ever made or if i have a differential problem. please let me know.

Re: Problem with Drive Axles??

Well...I'd start by changing the fluid - or at least checking the level. It sounds like the limited slip isn't releasing.

maybe someone put a locker in your rear-end.

Re: Problem with Drive Axles??

It sounds like the rear is locked up. The hopping is the outer tire actually getting dragged across the ground because the rear end isn't opening to allow the tire on the outside of the turn to rotate faster and the one on the inside of the turn is trying to push the truck sideways because it wants to rotate faster than the tight radius of the turn will let it. I'll vote no, it's not supposed to do that. At least mine doesn't do that :2cents:

the inside tire should slow down not the outside speeding up and i already knew that that was the problem. im taking it to a shop to take a look at it today.

Re: Problem with Drive Axles??

ok. here's the deal.
The guy took the cover plate off and saw nothing. so he had me go to the GM dealer and buy a bottle of LSD additive. i havent put it in yet because i couldnt get the plug out. i almost stripped it and said wait! its kinda hard to get under the truck w/o a jack and lowered 2 in. so ill get that put in tomorrow w/ a jack. he said that that sould fix it. im not sure.

Re: Problem with Drive Axles??

The outside spins faster in relation to the inside. It has to it's on the outside of the arc. We're saying the same thing. :D
What does that mean, he didn't see anything? You mean like metal shavings?
I've never had to rebuild one myself but I but I'm sure someone on here has done one.

Here's what I found:
From the archives:
If you ever have the opportunity, try this test. Put the truck on a lift
or jackstands with all 4 wheels off the ground. Start the engine and put
it in gear so the wheels are spinning. CAREFULLY grab one rear wheel and
slow it down. As you slow one down, the other will speed up, to a point.
When the one you are slowing is almost stopped, you will feel the rear
lock and start to apply power to the one you are slowing. You won't be
able to hold it then.
Try it on the front wheels also and you will see the difference. The
front differential is open, and will not lock the opposite wheel. Also,
when you are done this test, shut the engine off and let the wheels stop
by themselves. If you hit the brakes, you will set an ABS code because
of the different wheel speeds.
Our rears lock by a governor in the differential, as opposed to a
limited slip posi that use friction cones to keep them somewhat locked
but allow some slip to go around turns. The limited slip additive you
put in those kind of differentials allows the slip. I've known people to
intentionally leave the additive out to get a better locking action for
racing. Our rear differentials do not need the additive at all because
they do not use the friction cone type posi.
Hope that explains it.

Then in the Helms I found this:
"Locks in turns"
Governor assembly tight in case.....free up governor
Broken or weak governor flyweight spring......replace the governor assembly and latching bracket
Flyweight in the governor assembly stuck...replace the governor assembly and latching bracket
Broken cam plate and or governor drive teeth....Replace the cam plate, governor assembly, and latching bracket

I tried to find some pics online of this stuff, but can't find anything but companies wanting to sell stuff. Sorry.
Hopefully someone can give some more info on this or corrections. :(

thanks for that info. i did all the tests and everything is working properly now. i added the additive and work it in. no more peeling out.

Re: Problem with Drive Axles??

If the limited slip additive helped, then the above information is incorrect.
It must have friction plates in it. From what I saw, the additive actually makes the plates slip when going around corners. I wish someone had a syty page that had exactly what these have in them with pics and everything. I'm sure someone on here has rebuilt a syty rear correctly. As old as these things are getting, seems like they'd have more problems.

Re: Problem with Drive Axles??

i took it to a tranny shop and he said the gear looked reletively newer than what a 14yo rearend should look like.
