Precision 71GTQ thoughts?

Thinking about buying a used 71GTQ. It is a standard bearing with a .81 on the exhaust side. It has the billet wheel and wanted to find out if any of you guys out there run this turbo on your Sy or Ty.

I was searching on the net and did not find any with a .81 a/r, only in .65 or .85? Anyways, looking for some turbo gurus to chime in. Thanks!

I was running the 67gtq and it was bad ass!! Power was unbelievable and I was no where near topping out.

t3 or t4?

Good question, I'm not 100% sure I'll have to find out. The guy who ran this turbo ran it on a GN and made a few 9 second passes. Its a 3 bolt GN type 71GTQ. It has a 4" inlet and a 3"outlet.

i'm not sure if a GN housing is available in a .81. Usually that is a T4 configuration either on center or tangential. GN housings are usually a .63 or .85 a/r.

if it is a 3 bolt, then we offer a 3-4 bolt adaptor so it will bolt up to an RPM, PTE or ATR downpipe.

but that turbo would be a good 10 sec turbo for sure!

I just got off the phone with the seller of the turbo. He told me that he has both housings. Both housings will come with the turbo. The 3bolt is a .85 ar on the exhaust side.

The 4 bolt housing currently is the one on the turbo. Is it easy to swap out housings or should you have a turbo shop do it? And once I do swap to the 3 bolt so it fits my set up how much can I get for the 4 bolt housing? I won't need it...

Use penetrating oil on the bolts and let them soak before you go after them, pretty easy to snap them off. Go slow. If the housing is going to come off on its own it will slip right off. I've had to send a couple back to PTE to have them pressed off because they won't budge. Be careful with the turbine fins once the housing is loose, they are brittle. Housings aren't worth much, around $100 if you find a buyer who needs it. New housings from PTE are around $150.

Could someone who knows how to read turbo numbers explain to me what a precision 71GTQ should have on the housing, hot side and cold side? Thanks...

I run the 72 gtq. I dont know why everyone isn't using this turbo. its very street able and it makes huge power with supporting mods. Mine spools up like the stocker!!

I'm going to make the wild guess that "everyone" doesn't have the $$$. But that is just my wild guess.

I'm going with the 71GTQ because I happen to run across one for a great price. Its used but was rebuilt and ready to go. I guess I'm just paranoid when buying stuff and I want to make sure it has the right numbers on the housing and turbo. Anyone know how to read that stuff? I'll post some pictures up when I get a chance. I'm getting two housings with it, 1 in a 4 bolt and one in a Buick 3 bolt. The Buick housing is a .85 A/R and the 4 bolt is a .81. I'm sure there is not that big of difference between a 71 and 72GTQ is there autoaddictions?

Im sure the .81 will spool a bit faster but even if its close to mine it will work fine. You will need a converter with a bit more stall either way

Im also with you on this. Im actually running a 76mm q trim and it rocks especially up top. What a/r are you running on your hot side?

run the .81 housing. its still might be a little laggy down low but you'll love it once it starts to pull.
