Possible life

What kind of life does a stock sy/ty really have mechanicaly after 130,000 miles. I have watched the market for a while and seen it drop to what it is today. Seems like the best time to buy. As a GM tech I saw 4.3s and 4l60s go for over 200,000k on a regular basis, even the bw t-case as well. Seems the market is flooded with 90k+ trucks now and I want to know opinions on the life span of a stock sy/ty. I see a lot of them have rebuilt engines and trannys well before 100k, but I also see 130k stock original and still going strong. Seems like that kind of mileage would be a good bargaining chip but I see a lot people thinking these trucks are worth there weight in gold even at 140k. What are some opnions.
Thanks

Re: Possible life

It all depends, like all other vehicles, on how it was taken care of and how it was driven. There are some that have had motors and trannys replaced at 50k or less and then there are some that have 130k+ and havent had to do anything major. If you plan on purchasing one just make sure to check it out GOOD. Mainly for blow-by and the way it drives. If you have it available, run some type of scan tool on it. Good luck.

Re: Possible life

if you're a gm tech you should know its all in the maintenance and how its treated mostly. The standard 4.3s don't make enough power to break things. Slap a turbo on it and things are gonna start breaking with the added power we're making. If you're a tech, i wouldn't be afraid of buying a high mileage truck and taking care of it.

Re: Possible life

I guess part of what I am looking for is input mostly from people that have a sy/ty with over 140k and what kind of luck they have. I havent seen anyone with over this kind of mileage that has said everything is going great.
Thanks

Mine has 127K on the odo... It's a GM Vehicle. 127K on any GM vehicle means it's time to replace some things to keep it driving nice...I'm working on control arm bushings, shocks, steering shaft and I've already done the power steering pump. It is 14 years old now.

As far as the motor goes, when I get my truck put back together and can datalog it again, i'll know better where I stand engine wise.

My transmission is most likely on the way out, but what stock/stock rebuild SyTy trans isn't on it's way out after 50-60,000 miles?

I've daily driven my truck for 4 years and it has yet to leave me stranded anywhere

Time to get it buttoned back up and on the road.

I have 152,000 on my whole drivetrain, and I think I just blew the TC Chain... but I have always worried about the trans going any day now.

Re: Possible life

I recently purchased a sy with 134xxx on it and it don't bother me that it's that high. I had a few issues with low boost and it running rough but i sorted them out and now it runs great, they must be VERY fast with low miles because mine seems like a rocket and it's stock engine has no doubt seen it's best days. As the others have posted it has a lot to do with how it was maintained, my truck just needed some TLC and a good cleaning and tune up to get things right, i will be getting it rebuilt in the future though because i noticed it has a faint lower end rattle type noise that happens after the truck has been running for 25 mins or so that's only noticeable at very low rpm's, but i'm still very happy with it.

Re: Possible life

Thanks for the input, I remember putting a motor or two in at 1200 miles while these things were still under warranty. I have also seen them come in as daily drivers with 100k and no real troubles. Thanks again for all the input.

Re: Possible life

I have a mostly stock sy with 130xxx miles on it. I just came back from Ocean city MD car cruise.drove down and back no problems. We did a few launches & wooped up on some street roders. It was good times. I drive her semi daily mostly just nice days. Just keep them clean and tuned up & they'll treat you nice. Buy the way she's for sale!!

Re: Possible life

I'm looking to buy a Sy w/ just over 90k miles in the next couple days. Overall the truck seems to be in very good shape except for a rough idle and a miss. There is a burnt #6 plug wire which is being changed and if it straightens things up I'll be a new owner.

Re: Possible life

friday im going to look at a ty with 102K, looks clean, was previously owned by a guy that still has a sy, appears to be taken care of. hopefully things work out and i will have a ty by the end of the week

Re: Possible life

How the previous owner drove and maintained the truck, makes a big difference in how long the engine lasts, this is even more so with the finicky SyTy motor. Quite a few SyTy motors are ticking time bombs at 50K & some are still running strong at 100K miles. I personally like the SYTy appraoching 100K miles truck for the $ spent because they can be in good shape but don't have the premium a low mileage truck has. 50K miles doesn't mean the truck is problem free (maybe 50/50), you probably need to go under 20K miles stocker to have a very good chance finding a perfect running SyTy.

Why wouldn't someone selling a vehicle replace one spark plug wire.

"One plug wire laid on the manifold and needs replaced."

That is a turn off to me...

Me too so far. Says it's the #6 wire and hard to get to. Says he's changing plugs and wires. After that I may consider it.

there were a couple for sale on here that said things have high mileage, but run great. but as stated before, it's all about how ppl take care of the vehicle. im a service manager, and you being a tech, im sure have seen some higher mileage vehicles come in from customers that you know will buy just about anything to keep the vehicle running well. but i have also seen vehicles come into the shop that are pretty new, and run like crap. yesterday we just had an 05 caravan with 27k and it already has a problem with crank & cam sensor codes in the ECU.

things to remember is you would be buying a truck that was made in 92/93...it's not going to be perfect. what you should expect is what is needed to get it running perfect.
