Possible GP crossmembers

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Alright I have some more news for everyone.
Mike is thinking of using DOM tubing and powdercoating instead of Chromoly, cost vs weight it doesnt seem smart enough to spend the extra money for such a little gain.

I talked with Mike about making sure the driveshaft loop would not hit the driveshaft when the vehicle is put into the air, he said they could do an oval loop for the extra clearance.

Sorry I had no way of weighing the old crossmember when I removed it and its already been sent to the scrap yard.

I do plan on making a new rear crossmember some day so I can mount my fuel cell under the bed but as of right now I have no plan to do it anytime soon. Maybe Mike would like to?

Loeryder
THe flat piece of metal on the Dustan is my phil chiver driveshaft loop. I sent it to Dustan and he welded it on for me, can't use the loop though as it would hit the driveshaft when I put the truck up on the hoist. Making sure Mike's won't do this.

I know the RPM pic is a little hard to see but gives an idea on what it would look like.
The gas tank is on the left. Basically the one in that pic is a driveshaft loop, that truck still has the torsion bars and the crossmember we are replacing.
The one Mike will be making for us will be in the spot of the old crossmember and be a driveshaft loop plus crossmember.
The crossmember being elimintated here is the one the torsion bars run through.
So Loeryder not the trans crossmember but the other one is the one you would be removing to put this one in its place.

Hopefully that clears some things up for everyone and we can get the ball rolling on this soon!:D
Just need 2 more people and to make sure the people on the list are for sure confirmed.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Mike,

Sounds good, while you are under there how about looking into making a tubular bolt in 4L80E trans mount crossmember to match. I'd be interested in a few of them.

thanks,

The one I do is a chromoly tubular TRANSMISSION crossmember that's powercoated for the 4L80e. There's pics in my forum of it.
Are you saying you want Mike to make a tubular TORSION bar replacement crossmember? I'm sure it will be tubular as stated above.

I have TY if that matters. Put me on the list. I'll talk to Mike today hopefully.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Hi George,

Yea, I have one of the early JS install kits with the tubular trans crossmember but I'd prefer a straight crossmember without the bends to clear the torsion bars since I'm running Mike's coil overs and I also would like to see a beefier trans mount pad with some side gusseting.

thanks,

Yeah the new ones are now gusseted. Jeff and I argued about this. The place I use now did them to my spec(cnc, chromoly, reinforced mounting pad, powdercoated not spraypainted, etc). My are still curved though to clear the torsion bars but still hits the stock holes for mounting. If you do a truly straight piece, you've gotta drill the frame is all.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

George,

Sounds like you improved the design since I got mine. I designed a crossmember on Solidworks with a straight tube and extended brackets that line up with the factory frame holes, I just haven't had the time to build it. Let me know what you get for your new style crossmember and I may just get one of those to replace mine.

thanks,
Dave

They're $350 but they're still bent which sounds like your wanting to get away from.
BTW, Thank you so much for the donation for the CCA!!! I just got paypal notification and your down payment for the planetary came through also.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Any update on the possibility of Mike making these crossmembers?

thanks,

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Yes last time I talked to Mike he is going to get one made up and see what the best way to make one up and then give us an update and show us the final product.

I figure this probably is a slow process so I will contact him once in a while to see how its coming along.

Hopefully we dont loose any body in the wait.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

I have been looking for one of these for my 80e + rear coilovers . Am i reading correct that it will have an oval drive shaft hoop included for the 175 ? No exhaust hangers needed .

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Yup we are planning on having this crossmember made with the driveshaft loop for $175 for the gp price.
I am sure its going to be a piece that many people are going to want especially since no one makes one yet.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

fyi, we have not set a price yet. We have only estimated the cost per unit which will vary with people willing to participate in the GP. We are working on the prototype tomorrow so once it is done we will post pictures and from there we can get a list of people who like what they see.

Any plans on a oil pan/mounts for the 80e combo? I'm ready to go with this combo, just finding a turbo 4.3 not what I expected it to be. Looking for the v8 to make my hunger pains go away. For a oil pan, I know there's a aluminum one there for the 700r4, how about a tin one for the 80e, get it cad plated.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

it will be a complete kit.. all adaptors, aluminum oil pan, motor mounts, crossmembers, etc. It will be alittle while since once we get the prototypes finished it will take some time to get fixtures made, and templates cut for production.. By the end of the year would be realistic, possibly sooner i hope. We have got several requests which is why we have pushed it up on the priority list.

No problem. on the time frame. It'l be a great Christmas present, also will give me some time to get the engine/tranny ready.

Re: Possible GP crossmembers

Ok, we'll here is the prototype we came up with. Bolts to the original bolt holes, keeps the exhaust mounts in the stock location yet adds additional clearance for larger diameter piping and dual exhaust if needed. Weight of this sample is 14lbs as pictured using 1.75" mild steel tubing.

Let me know what you think.
