Plugs and wires

Hi guys I know this has been talked about a lot.
But I can't find a topic close enough to what I'm looking for. So here we are a new topic.

I need two things. First some new spark plug wires. But I want the wires to last a while. With the heat and changing plugs occasionally. I had a set of Taylor wires. They held up for a bit. But I wasn't impressed.

Second I need some new plugs. I tried NGK TR6's I believe those were the plugs I tried. I need plugs that will work with the vortec heads.

So with the heat so high in our trucks engine bay. What wires are you guys running and where do I get them?
So I would like to see what plug and wire combinations you guys are running.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Plugs and wires

mike hood on FB has tune up kits(cap/rotor/wires/plugs and heat sheilds for wires) $99.

Cool. I will look into ac delco wires.
I have tried the tune up before. I didn't really like the how long the wires and stuff lasted. So I'm trying to just get stuff that will last a while. The Taylor wires were decent.

Is there any other wires that are more heat resistant than taylors?
What kinda of plugs are you guys running with Vortec heads?

Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Re: Plugs and wires

Sportmachines has wires as well. Much better than Taylors I suspect. The trick is heat protection. "Cloth" heat shields are a must on 2,4,6 cyl. Also if you buy extras the metal ring can be worked out the other end then they slip over the boot for protection further up the wire.

I've tried the msd wires before. They didn't last as long as I would have liked them too. I've been used the special covers for the plug wires. They have worked really well one some other project cars.
I've never seen the metal rings that hold the covers on better. Where would I buy those?

Get creative.

I bought some heat shield sheathing stuff. Comes in a roll, you unroll it, cut to desired length and install.

Its a little tricky to get them up/around the 90 boot but its possible. I'd cut them in 6 inch sections to make sure enough of the cable is protected. I kept them up or in place with small pieces of MIG stainless welding wire (0.30).

I use the standard 43ts spark plug.

I am going to get some of the heat shield in a roll and use that in addition cloth cover. There's just so little room in there.
Anyone running NGK TR6's with Taylor wires and heat shields all over?
I was thinking about the wires that you cut yourself. Anyone using those wires?

Code what?
Please address what is not lasting on your wires, how are they failing?

I will agree that Taylor's do not hold up to frequent plug changes, the boots are not durable and the connection to the wire is weak.

I have found the MSD's to be the best wire for the money that hold up to frequent plug changes. My Typhoon has no heat Shields with stock manifolds and I use the Taylor aluminum boot 90*s to get longer life from the boot. All the trucks I've installed the MSD's on with factory shields have had no failures. I use the 4.3 set and put socks on 1 & 6

I have had issues with Taylor wires and frequent plug changes. The Taylor wires handled the heat well. Then the MSD wires held up with the plug changes. But then couldn't handle the heat. Part of the problem might be that the stock heat shields were lost in the process of the rebuild. There are still a couple on the truck. But I have still had heat problems with those two areas.

Taylor makes aluminum boots? I didn't know that. I will look into getting some.
They have been working for you in a couple places?

Re: Plugs and wires

I've never seen one of those used on a SYTY. I am gonna maybe get a couple so I can bend one and modify it to work better maybe. If it breaks I have two.
Sweet. Ya I'm gonna try that.

Thanks,

The problem I did have was the handle came off!! What would really help is if it was longer.

Yes without the heat shields the boots will crack and fail. The aluminum Taylor boot covers I'm using are made for the Taylor wires but work on the MSDs. I don't use protection on the wire itself, route it accordingly and secure and no problems.

The tool that Don recommended works very well. Mine came loose in the handle over the years but some epoxy fixed that. I wish they made one a little longer so it could slightly be bent.

Re: Plugs and wires

I changed the cap and rotor over the weekend. The truck sounds so much better. But desperately needs new plugs and wires. I was thinking NGK TR6's for the plugs. Because I haven't heard of anyone else using any other plugs with vortec heads. On that note isn't anyone using any other plugs? Iridium plugs?

I am thinking about trying MSD wires again. But they are more expensive then Taylors. Plus I don't want black wires. Anyone know a place where I can get a SyTy specific set of MSD wires that aren't black?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Re: Plugs and wires

I would just source out the regular plugs for the truck. Specifically copper core. I don't know about all other stuff...

I ran a bunch of stuff. You could not properly gap the ix or iridium sets. With the original copper core spark plugs you can gap them how you want. I dialed in my typhoon quite well using some of these methods.

Whatever you do, don't get Taylor wires. ACDELCO on mine and they work a million times better than Taylors.

Re: Plugs and wires

Magnecor. Sounds korny but they literally transformed my truck. The difference was noticeable the moment I started it.
