Pinging or something?

Yesterday we went to the mall in GR. On the way, I passed someone on the expressway that I normally wouldn't have, but the guy behind me had been a jerk earlier to someone trying to get on, and he wanted to pass the guy too. I was going about 70 and punched it, up to about 80. It didn't quite feel right, but not really anything wrong either...

A couple miles down the road, we got off at our exit. While I was coming to a stop at the light, the engine was pinging or knocking or something, I don't know what. It sounded like the injectors (that sewing machine-ish clicking), but loud enough to hear it in the cab. I drove the few blocks to the mall and popped the hood, and it was gone. I didn't notice any weird behavior either during or after this, but I want to make sure I didn't leave part of my engine behind or something.

Any ideas on what this might've been?

Code what?
Do you have a FP guage hooked up to the fuel rail? they tend to make that ticking noise, but i think your describing it as being louder then that.

Have no other clue'

Sounds like yours is doing something similar to mine . It seems easiest for me to duplicate this noise almost every time by slightly poking the throttle right off idle. Sounds like pinging although it's not just a little louder. I even hear it occasionally under light braking at low speeds.

YES!! Mine does that too!!!! What is that?? I also suspect my under-hood mechanical fuel pressure gauge or the KB FPR. I hope we can all get to the bottom of this. The tapping noise drives me nuts. It seems to come and go randomly. Sometimes my fuel pressure gauge needle bounces and sometimes its solid.

Mine does that, only its costant. The only time the damn things stops is when I let off the throttle at cruising speed. I am damn embarassed to take anyone anywhere in the thing.

I put in a FP gauge, and it worked fine, but 1 week later and the need jumps and tick tick tick effn tick. The needle jumps so bad I have no idea what fp is at accelartion. :x

I replaced the fuel pump and pulsator...no change.

I am going to try the fpr and injectors next. I am not just throwing parts, these were all going to be changed anyway, but I need to silence this incessant ticking. I turn the damn radio up and still hear it, on smooth roads I can actuall feel the damn tick. Someone please figure this shit out! ::steamer:

I have the stock FPR and no gauge.

I honestly thought I had blown the engine and it was a piston clunking around. I've never actually heard that happen, but this sounded really bad. Cruising up to the stoplight, 20-30mph, with the radio on, I could hear it. I've put 50k on the Sy in the past year and a half and never heard anything like this. It kept doing it while I was stopped at the light, but after driving the couple blocks to the mall, it was gone. I drove the ~30 miles home, and another 30 or so yesterday, and I didn't hear it again. That makes me think it's nothing too bad, but it just sounded so horrible...

If it´s a tapping sound tha you can hear in the cab,
and if it comes from what you think, somewhere on the passenger side,
it might be the fuel-lines tapping against the floor. This is very common.
It could also come from the gearshift cable tapping the floor.

correct. i was driving a typhoon, with a new motor, and with a fuel line hitting today, making that same tapping noise.

I had a loud ticking noise once in a while but it turned out that 93 octane that I had been using wasn't good enough.. as soon as I used some octane booster.. that cleared up the ticking for me. Just thought i'd add that in. I would put money on the fuel lines banging in your case though

I had the tranny rebuilt a couple months ago, so the fuel lines could've been shifted. However, this problem lasted at most three minutes. It wasn't there when I started driving, or when I stopped. Only for that little bit coming up to and sitting at the light. I haven't heard it since, nor have I ever heard it before. It seems to me that if something got shifted enough to cause a problem, it'd happen all the time, rather than just for a mile during regular driving. My truck runs great, knock-wise. A max of 2.1 degrees at TCC lockup, otherwise flat 0 for a 1/4 mile WOT run.
