Paypal Help, selling parts to another member

Where do I begin? First of all I do not want to mention names and start any kind of problems with another SyTy member here. I just want to write out exactly what happen and find out if I have anything to worry about.

So someone here offered me money for a Syclone part I no longer needed. I accepted the offer and after a few emails back and forth the price ended up dropping. Shipping is very costly because it is being shipped to a different country. With that said, I want to make sure I'm protected because right now I'm poor as hell and really can't get screwed over. Long story short the member ended up using paypal and sent a payment but we never agreed on a price and shipping methods. Now I either have to send the funds back, or ship the item and accept how much the member sent. I don't have a problem shipping the item, but the member paid with a credit card through paypal. If I send the item with its value insured and with tracking and delivery confirmation do I have anything to worry about. Basicly I don't want to end up shipping the item and then the buyer canceling the credit card payment or doing a charge back on my paypal account. I heard of these things happening and I'm paranoid about it. If you know about paypal and how this would work please let me know. I would think everything will work out but wanted to see what the experts thought here. Thanks.

Edit Post: Once I figure out what to do, I'll delete this thread or have a mod delete it. Thanks for your help guys/girls.

I have only had 1 issue in ~8yrs on the board, I suspect you will be fine assuming the price paid is acceptable to you, if it isn't return his money and reoffer item for sale, and/or let him know.

^ Same here in not so many years, and I have bought/sold a lot of stuff through the board.

You need to ship it with a tracking number that shows delivery (not just a customs number). That will be the only recourse you will have if the payment is cancelled.

Ok, so if I do ship the item and get a signature required and tracking and delivery conformation even if the payment is canceled I'll be able to prove I sent the item and get my money back? Can anyone confirm with me how risky this is.

paypal auto-protects the seller in most cases. pretty sure you'll be fine...aside from the fact that 99% of the board is trustworthy.

Alright, thanks Renz. I'll wait a day or so and let the buyer know what I'll do. Like to get some more feedback.

I think you should post the name of the buyer, that way you can get some feedback from the board members and hopefully feel more comfortable with there replies. Your not saying anything bad about the buyer just watching out for your money and item.

Just my 2cents

If you already received the "funds," whats there to worry about? How can he cancel a payment that you already have in your pocket?

It is called a charge back. People have been doing this with paypal from what I have heard. What happens is once the item ships and they receive it they cancel the credit card payment and it gets charged back to my paypal account. Apparently it has been the latest type of scam. Using a credit card though paypal you have like 30 days or something and can cancel the payment which charges back the paypal account it was sent to.

For this very reason is why I was asking advice and if there is a way I can protect myself from this happening. For example, reporting it to paypal with email proof, tracking proof, delivery conformation and signature required. Then end up getting my funds back if something was to happen.

Well then dont bother shipping it though the post office, because you cannot get delivery confirmation or their bullshit tracking on International shipments, so that will save you some money right there

If you go with UPS, tracking is already included and all UPS packages are automatically insured up to $100 unless you request a higher insured value.

Basicly I don't want to end up shipping the item and then the buyer canceling the credit card payment or doing a charge back on my paypal account. I heard of these things happening and I'm paranoid about it.
Without naming names, is this person an active user on here? I know we have a lot of overseas guys who post pretty much daily. Odds are Ive probably dealt with them and have shipped numerous things to them and havent had any issues yet.

If this person is new, then I would be concerned.

Last but not least, if you didn't agree on shipped price, then simply go into your paypal and issue a complete refund. It wont hurt your account nor will it hurt his. No paypal fees will be lost and you guys can start over again fresh and avoid having to make another transaction later and lose more money to paypal.

I'd just PM him and tell him you never agreed on a price, and he either needs to send $x amount more to you, or refund his money.

You can get international tracking with by using the USPS EMS shipments. It's usually cheaper than UPS or FedEx also.

Also, the tracking information is what PayPal would give to the guys credit card company if he tried a chargeback. It's a PITA and it keeps your money in PayPal limbo for weeks.

Re: Paypal Help, selling parts to another member

I am overseas and use paypal on most things if I possibly can as it is clean and easy, fast and effective.

I am not the buyer before anyone thinks so!

What you are worried about is a fair concern. Paypal allows you to charge back after 45 days but ONLY if PayPal rule in favour of the buyer. He can't just cancel and take the money back. PayPal as the arbitraters have the money in escrow so it isn't easy for someone to withdraw funds.

In the past I have had to do this as a guy on ebay bought something off me then claimed I lied (I didn't) and I entered a dispute with PayPal which he then lost. PayPal ruled in my favour as I had proof of the transaction etc etc.

He won't get money off you unless you can't prove you posted it or that is was substantially different. The fact that it is overseas is immaterial. You can chargeback to people in the US just as easily. Like it has been said above, just keep receipts, take a pic of it in the condition it is in, and keep as much documentary evidence as you can to show you are a legit seller and you'll be fine.

PayPal is pretty good - I am sure you'll have no problems.

Thanks for the info, this coming from you gives me less paranoia. After talking in emails with the buyer, I feel much more comfortable selling the item. I'm going to ship it out first thing this week. I saved all of the emails, it clearly shows I sent pics and talked about price and shipping. I even wrote up a sales agreement which we both agreed to.

I guess when your really poor and can't afford to get screwed it tends to be a little stressful. Matter of fact dealing with members on this board has been my best experience of any forum. The very first meet, I purchased a cowl hood, clear turns, clear side markers, and a grill and the member let me take the items with only putting 40 dollars down. My balance started out at around 600 bucks and I still owe him 250 bucks. I'll be able to send him the money I owe after this part is shipped and everything is final. I don't know why anyone would want to end up with a bad name in the SyTy world. It is a close knit group from what I have learned in the past year or so.

You're totally right. The biggest obstacle to smooth transactions is communication and as you guys are talking that doesn't seem to be a problem.

My feedback rating is very important to me as I am sure it is to other people and I try to be courteous and professional with all transactions. It only goes wrong when you get bad info or none at all.

Glad I put you at ease and glad to hear you have it all sorted :)

This IS a great community. :)

Wish the community was larger, but then again that would kind of take away from it all in the end. Not to mention we would not be as rare or exotic.
