Passenger Exhaust manifold turbo studs NOW WITH PICS

has anyone here replaced a stud on their turbo mani? I just got a non cracked manifold to slap on, but the only bolt is f'ed up pretty bad.

I'm guessing that they're screw in studs, but also guessing that 12 years of heat/rust won't make removal entirely easy.

well i know they are removable becuase one came out when i was just taking a nut off it. But the f'ed up one of course is in tight.

guess i'll just weld a nut onto the stud and take it out that way.

Did you try putting two nuts back to back so one stops the other from turning, and see if that works :dunno:

the stud is messed up to the point that you can't really get a nut on it. I dont know if there are enough threads to get 2 on either. I dunno...i'll try it after work. If not, welding one on should work

Anyone tried using bolts there? I tried a 3/8 header bolt....the ones with the small 7/16" head....The threads are the same, but there's too much side to side play as if they're not fat enough....Seems that the right bolt with a small head would be easier to work with being in such a tight area there around the exhaust housing...maybe there's an allen bolt out there that would work....

if studs don't work out i'll probably use a bolt. But for now i'm going to try to use studs. Or you could always make a bolt out of one of the studs.

They are metric studs. You could heat the crap oput or it and try to remove it woth a pair of vice grips.

already tried channel locks w/o heat....just scraped the stud. I'll prolly try the double nut tonight, and then weld

ok....i thought i'd add some pics to this for your enjoyment of my struggle w/ this stupid stud.

without further ado....6 easy steps to NOT get a stud out:

Step 1. Get manifold with messed up stud (but no crack)

Step 2. weld nut onto stud, and attempt to remove....but break stud

Step 3. Re-weld nut onto stud

Step 4. Attempt again, only to break stud again...only inside the manifold

Step 5-6. Drill hole in whats left of stud, weld in a nut into the hole....

Steps 7 -xx. Attempt to remove and break bolt out....then give up for the night and go to the bar :lol:

I have a feeling some PB Blaster and a pair of vice grips could have gotten that out, :lol:

i highly doubt it...i heated the hell outta that bolt when i welded it...this all the globs of weld. And it still went no where....well not all of the stud anyway :lol:

I new that welder would be a mistake! You needed to heat the manifold to make IT larger then the stud would have walked right out. When you welded on the stud you made it bigger, tighter and weaker. Youll learn.......

Yes, I did this and its been installed on the truck that Mark sold to Tim Barrett, you can install Allen socket bolts in there in place of the studs. They are a metric thread so not every place will have them but IMO, its a worthwhile modification. The removal of the bolts make it easier to yank the turbo off with out pulling the DP out of the way (Tims truck has a PTE kit on it, so this is a null issue but for stock turbo/dp trucks this is good move)..

Also, swapping to allen head bolts, makes it easier to remove them in the future with the corresponding socket and an extension on a ratchet

Studs are OK for the factory, they make it a PITA to pull off @ home tho..

I realize yer past this point, but Sears sells this for like $20-25 :

And they make them in different sizes and work very well. I wouldnt recommend using it on anything you plan on re-using (they beat up the threads).. Just giving you information for future issues involving stud removal if the double nut method doesnt work..
