"Parking" isnt working...?

Hello, park isnt working on my firnd's Ty and also the shifts are acting kind of funny. Park feels just like neutral and the gears wont even be where the letters in the dial are. Any ideas what can be causing this and what has to be done to fix it? Thanks.

Possible that the bracket that holds the cable is bent.

When I ran over a re-tread coming home from Nats 99, I bent that bracket and everything went out of alignment and gears werent actually where the indicator said.

Did your truck hold still while parked on anything but the most level surface? This one even kept on moving forward once he shifted to P, i even thought the engine was still engaged.
I looked at it today and opened up the console and everything looked normal except for a lil wear pit on the little rod that pulls the Park cable, also lifted the truck and the shifter cable and bracket looked fine.

Check the 2 bolts that hold the bracket to the transmission. I just had this on my 93. No park. The bolts were loose. That's all. Easiest fix I've ever had on a Ty.

That makes sense Dave, i lifted it and looked at it but since it was pretty hot i really didnt tug on it, should have had some gloves and check it.

Try adjusting the shifter cable first. Had to do it on the Sy.

IS THE FRONT DRIVE-SHAFT REMOVED?
They will creep, when parked on a hill without the front driveline installed.
X2. Also, I have seen the cable sheath come out of the fitting for the shifter cable causing it to do what you are describing. Take your console tray off and look in there and make sure your cable is in one piece.

Re: "Parking" isnt working...?

How do you know how much to adjust the cable? I didnt wanna fiddle with it since its not mine and my buddy was short on time for test drives.
The front drive shaft is in place, i did make sure to look at it. Actually he lives in a very steep hill and used to leave it parked there all the time, now he keeps it at his brothers house thats pretty flat but still puts the "hand brake" on it.
Its probably going to be the bracket, everything was in place under the shifter tray.
That Ty is got the deep pan compared to my Sy and didnt seem safe to stick a hand in there when hot.

Re: "Parking" isnt working...?

Thanks Dave but i dont think its internal, the truck was still moving forward from the impulse it had and the street was slightly inclined. I made sure to check if it wanted to go in park when gassing it but no, it didnt move at all, it just felt like N. The funny shifting feel might be due to whats been suggested, a loose bracket or dissadjusted cable.
Going to make sure on monday and let you guys know, thanks again.

Re: "Parking" isnt working...?

So it just turned out to be a pan bracket missing bolt and a very loose one, thank you all for the advise.
