painting typhoon

Here are some pics of my progress of getting typhoon ready for paint. I am also doing some body mods like shave the stupid roof rack, roof weld lines, door handles, antenna, and rear tailgate lock. The phoon needs a paint job really bad from paint peeling off and some jerk keyed the driver’s door 2 yrs ago within one week of buying it. There is really not much body work except for mods and some rust on the front two fenders at the normal spot. Please suggest any ideas that might help.

For the color I am going to paint the factory color, but for the cladding I was thinking the gray was kind of out of date, so I wanted to do more dark metallic green with more flake. What do you all think??

Thanks

Joe

Re: painting typhoon

When you shave the door handels weld a piece of metal in the hole, dont just fill the hole full of body filler. I would also weld the roof rack holes but its not as big of a deal. Just try to use as little body filler as you can. You'll be glad you did in the future.

It depends how much free time you got, what kind of materials you are using, and if you know what you are doing. I really don’t have much bodywork experience, but my roommate has many years. The pics that are showing, is only about 3 to 4 weeks. I am hoping to have it done when spring starts.

On mine, the paint is starting to bubble along the bottom edge of the rear side windows, because of the way the molding traps water. When I paint mine (hey.... it could happen!) I plan to pull the side windows out to make sure any rust is fixed, etc. Might be worth a close look on yours.

Yeah I am taking all the glass out. I need to get a new windsheild because of all of the pivits, cant see with sun glare. The side window on the right leaks, so hopely no rust when I pull it out before I prime the truck.

I would go easy on the flake....we have a fast stang down here that has alot of metal flake and the car is now known as "The bowling ball".... :D

I welded the roof rack holes on mine but they were rusted through....I made sheetmetal patches for that....It required removing the entire interior to prevent torching it and splattering everything.....be sure to protect your glass it you decide to do any type of welding....Good to see someone cleaning up another on a ty!!!

i would go with a Liquid Silver for the cladding with that color combo......Just my 2cents..............

I am try to figure out if I should remove the cladding mounting hardware such as the disc on the doors and rocker support. I am about to paint the truck, should I tape them off or paint right over them. I want to remove them, but those damn rivits.

Re: painting typhoon

Did you weld this seam and then just skim it with filler?

I'm pretty sure that if you just used filler that it won't take long to crack..

I have talked to some people and they said it should be find. It all depends on what kind of filler you are using. I am using some high quality body filler that I get from an auto body supply store. It kind of sucks because you have to buy it by the gallon, which gets pricey.

I'm sure that your roof rack holes will be fine but I would be willing to bet that the body lines will crack...

I know that some of the other lines crack welds....I am sure body filler will crack if the welds crack....

What about the a-pillar?? That roof line is filled with filler from the factory and does not crack.

Hey man I don't understand. You are telling me you filled with seams with all metal, it cracked, then you are telling me to fill with metal.
