Only Making 14 Psi With New Upgraded Turbo

Before, when I had the stock turbo with all the 12sec upgrades with Ultimate Chip. My boost guage read exactly the same as the Ultimate. If it was on 18, the boost guage read 18. Same for 15, 16, and 17. I never had to adjust my wastegate rod after installing my Ultimate. I upgraded to a 20g and took it out for the first time and it pulled harder than ever, but only went up to 14, no matter what the chip was on. Does this mean I need to adjust the wastegate?

Yea, I would say take a couple turns on the rod and see if it changes.

If you get more or less you know what the problem is. I would say that of course the rod is set at basic spot and then it gets adjusted per application.

Sound correct to me.

Hey Fred, I know you like it looking stock. But you should have a real boost gauge in there
now since your making more than stock boost. If the aftermarket boost gauge is only reading 14 psi when the ultimate is asking for 18 then yes you need to adjust the rod. If you have a good boost gauge then ill shut up now.

Re: Only Making 14 Psi With New Upgraded Turbo

I do have Autometer boost and fuel pressure guages along with a two guage pillar pod. Thats the only interrior mods I have except the Ultimate control box under the dash with velcro. That was one of the last winter mods I did when I was doing my 12sec recipe from this forum. I would like to take it out again tomorrow after this problem is fixed. Our snow is all melted and we got about a inch of rains and the roads are clean. It sure seemed good to take the truck out today. It had been in the garage for over two months.

Hey Fred,
I'd sure do some datalogging. The 20g is pushing a lot more air, albeit at a lower pressure. The increase in performance could come from (in addition to more flow) running a little more lean than you were with the stock turbo. Before you start adjusting the rod, I'd check your AFR's and make sure you're not getting into trouble.... you're basically starting on a new tune with the new turbo.

Re: Only Making 14 Psi With New Upgraded Turbo

Anyone near Nanticoke Pa that could help me get my truck tuned? I donot have any tuning equipment and even if I went out and bought it, I would not know how to use it. Maybe someone could come here or I could travel a short distance if need be. I would not expect someone to do it for free. The truck has all new tune up parts, cap, wires, rotor, plugs and runs flawlessly.

When I took it out for the first time with the new 20g, I was worried about not being able to build boost with the stock torque converter. I was able to build 8-10 lbs with no problem. I only tried it twice and it pulled real hard but only up to 14psi on the 15 and 17 setting. At 10psi the rear tires broke loose and the truck sorta came off the line sideways. I'm gonna call Tim at Tim's Turbo and let him know the his build spooled up real nice off the line with no lag.

Anyone out there interested in the job?
