ok so now wtf

so i took the cover off the sy and went for a drive (longer than around the block) for the first time in.... i dunno at least a year... i quit driving it cause i was having this weird vibrating/rattling noise and didn't want to break anything cause i dont have time or money to eff with it.

so today i'm out driving and this vibrating/rattling seems like its about 10 times worse. i pulled over and just kinda revved the engine a bit and the vibration seems to kick in right around 1500rpms... once the vibration starts the rattling follows and then both go away at 2500+

when i'm driving the rattling starts around 1800rpms and then goes away around 2400 or 2500. At first i was thinking this was an issue with the TC because the rattling/vibes went away after the TC locked up, but i tried the same thing in reverse and it doesn't happen... and if i accellerate hard from a stop it doesnt happen either.

so anyway, i drove the truck back home and smelled burning tranny fluid when i got out. I looked under the truck and pretty much the whole 'underbelly' of the truck is covered with trans fluid... I can't really see where the leak is coming from cause theres so much fluid everywhere... but it looks like its coming from where it mounts up to the block or the front part of the pan? (i have a hughes deep dish pan).

i searched through about 12 pages of posts and didn't really find anything similar to these symptoms... I'll have to wait till it cools off before i go climbing under the truck...

busted tranny mount maybe?

A broken flexplate will do that. They crack right around the bolts that hold it to the crank. I've got a really good pic of one somewhere. If the flexplate is broken and the torque converter has been kinda flopping around(so to speak), it will tear up the pump seal and fluid will come out of where you are describing. If this has happened the pump is probably fubar too.

Re: ok so now wtf

thanks for the tip George... I'll get under the truck and check it out this weekend since i get presidents day off.

If it is indeed a broken flexplate and pump, can I fix those without having to drop the trans? I'm about as ignorant as they come when it comes to trannys  so any info is appreciated.

you can swp the flexplate without removing the trans comopletly from the truck. and you could also swap the pump without removing the trans. but I wouldnt want to try it. it would be just as much time IMO to pull it and do it right. that way you can have a look inside the trans and maybe head off another problem while you are at it.

Re: ok so now wtf

so here's what happened...

2 of the bolts holding the tranny to the block on the right side were missing. so the vibration from the tranny was causing it to bang against the block, which was making the rattling noise... AND causing false knock. The vibration from this was also shaking the tranny lines pretty good and actually wore through one of the lines, which was causing the leak.

so i got the bolts in, and fixed the tranny line... now its runs perfect! haha and i couldn't figure out why i was getting 18* of knock  . After fixing everything, i got 5* at the top of 2nd gear on old 91oct and 130* intake temps... (gotta fix the IC next)...

Re: ok so now wtf

thanks for the support guys! god knows i've been ready to throw in the towel on these trucks so many times cause i've had such bad luck... But i'm actually kinda mad at myself for putting this off for so long... i thought it was going to be a major repair that i didnt have money for, so i never bothered fixing it... only to find out it was a couple bolts and a leaky line. But, on the plus side it kept mileage off my truck haha.

Now just a few more things to fix or swap with the typhoon and the sy is ready to go on this dead market and await the phone calls from gardeners thinking its a cool looking 'che-vee' to throw the mower in.

We have all felt this way at one time or another. I hate and love my truck! Since problems like the one you described originally are usually bad and expensive I can understand your despair. But for once someone got lucky!

Unbelievable!! I also found a bellhousing bolt missing on my truck (the bitch bolt up near the knock sensor).

Glad to hear you found the problem and got it back on the road!!
