Ohhh boy not good!!!!

So me and my son went out to get ice cream and on the way back after sitting at the drive thru for 5 mins the truck would not shift from first to second so I turned down the radio and heard something knocking so I flipped thru the scan master and when I tried to rev the motor to get it to shift the knock sensor was going up to 5ish, anytime I brought the rpm up something was knocking near the rear of the motor. So I took side streets home and parked it in the garage. I was not beating on the truck. I just went for a cruse with the kid WTF. I drove the truck 60+ miles on the highway Sunday parked it in the garage no problems I didn't beat on it Sunday. The truck is a 93 with 24,000 miles. I'm not sure if I should be looking at the trans or the engine :rant::rant:

What did your oil pressure look like when you where at idle for 5 minutes. Check the cylinders with a vacuum gauge. Might be a be a bent or stuck valve.

About 20 psi nothing unusual I looked at it when I was at a stop light after I heard the knocking. At idle I don't hear a knock until I rev it up about 2000 rpm.

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

Not shifting sounds like the trans. Does it make the noise in neutral?

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

So did the transmission ever shift from 1st to 2nd?

No it did not I rev it up to 3500 it was knocking like a bitch and it still did not shift. I only tried it once then drove it slow with the flashers on. It shifted fine on the the drive to the ice cream store

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

You have trouble at the transmission then.

You will just have to figure out what.

Lots better than a engine.

What would be making the knocking noise then. Converter, flex plate, something inside the trans. But the flex plate would not stop the trans from shifting. I need to sleep on this and start looking into it after work tomorrow. This sucks. :(

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

Your engine would not cause the shifting issues you are having. And it is not very likely you developed a knock in the engine and not being able to shift at the same time.

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

When my trans went out. The Sprag blew apart and I was stuck. No forward gears. After we rebuilt the trans. I had a very late 1-2 shift. It was from contaminates that we did not get out when my sprag blew apart. I did not have a knocking sound. I don't know what the knocking sound is in your truck. I fixed my problem by clearing the line with a couple full throttle 0-60's. :) I could have done more harm than good and it was not recomended. but it worked for me. I would suggest pulling the pan on the trans and see if any metal chuncks are present. Could be contaminates from an old rebuild or your sprag is falling apart and stayed together long enough for you to make it home.

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

Check the color and smell of the transmission fluid....if it black as night and smells like burnt toast.....your tranny well...is also toast. My Ty drove fine to a gfs house....started to do the Rpm flare....parked it. Came out in the morning started to drive it 1-2 shift and reverse and a flaring tach is all I got....I think it was the clutch pack that got smoked....removed it got it rebuilt and it drives fine now.good luck man.

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

A good trans guy I know removed the cable from the throttle body ( on my truck) gave it a few quick tugs, and it was fixed...temporarily.

At the time there was debris clogging the lines. My shift would hold way out.. To not shift at all. He was able to bring my trans back to life by tugging on it a few times. His fix was temporary. As I ultimately destroyed the trans on my truck with a larger turbo.

Maybe you have some wear passing through? Does not explain the knock. Sounds pretty low mile to have problems

Re: Ohhh boy not good!!!!

I think after the truck sat for 18 years and was dry started 3 to 4 times a year I think the bearing are shot I have a lot of brass in the oil. So I'm saving up for a engine rebuild. I know it sucks but it will be back on the road maybe next year. I put a lot of money in it over the last winter with the suspension, brakes and powder coating.
