not shifting into 3rd

drove the Ty to work today and when I was a block or so away from work I noticed that the transmission wasn't shifting into 3rd. 1st to 2nd is firm and normal but when it comes time to shift into 3rd, it acts as if it goes into neutral and just revs. Just wondering if there is a simple fix that would explain this or if I should go ahead and set up for a tow home. Thanks in advance for any help

good thing I have been babying it since I've owned it. Need to start doing research on the cost comparison between a rebuild and a different transmission

ya, time for a rebuild. you could further diagnose the problem with a pressure gauge but all in all you are going to need a rebuild. you might have a busted 3-4 clutch piston or you might have broken a snap ring retainer.

You could try accelerating quickly in 2nd such that you get to a mph that you would normally be in 4th gear. and see if you have 4th. either way you could limp it around like that if it works but the more you drive it with a problem, the more it's going to cost you in the end,

Re: not shifting into 3rd

thank you for the reply. I had someone mention a vacuum control line. I wasn't sure if our transmissions have this. But my 1st to 2nd shift point was abnormal certain times I drove it. Sometimes it wouldn't shift from 1st until around 4k and when it did it was a pretty "violent" shift. And on the way home from work last night I tried to do what you suggested and get it into 4th. I took it to about 60ish (around 4.5k rpm) and then threw it into overdrive and it still wouldn't go past 3rd. And I won't be driving it until this issue is resolved, either through a rebuild or a new tranny. Thanks again to everyone for all the help

there is no such thing as a vacuum line on a 700R4. you're thinking TH400 or 350.

no matter what you decide to do you MUST keep your stock valve body. they are specific to the Syty and cannot be duplicated by anyone. rebuild your exact transmission if you want anything close to normal. if you don't it is hopeless to try and ever get it right. if you have it rebuilt by whomever make sure you do not let them swap it or trade yours in as a core for anything.

thanks again. i was told that the transmission was rebuilt about 3 or 4 years ago so I have no idea what has been done to it. I'm going to start looking around for someone to rebuild the transmission.

yeah that is the way I am leaning towards. The wife doesn't understand why I don't just want to take it to a local transmission shop here. I'll start the saving process and get in contact with John in regards to if he is willing to do the rebuild and pricing. I just want to thank everyone again for all the help. I wasn't looking forward to the day that the Typhoon would break but the feeling is not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

DO NOT take it to a local trans shop, you will be lucky if it lasts 3 days and you wont get your syty vb back.

Re: not shifting into 3rd

I think I may have found the issue, but I'm not sure. I downloaded and printed the how-to on transmission removal from archives and went about swapping transmissions. I then reached the section where it talks about the gasket between the transfer case and the tranny adapter. When I pulled my transfer case off all I saw was RTV on the transfer case. The how to specifically says not to use gasket maker because it may contaminate the tranny fluid or jam stuff up. I have my stock transmission sitting in my garage now so if I get super motivated I may try to learn how to rebuild it. Or I'll just send it to a pro and tell them what I found.

Got the truck all put back together again but couldn't find the fill tube grommet at any parts store so I am waiting for it to arrive so I can drive it again.

just run down to your local tranny shop and ask if you can buy one, thats what i did and the guy handed me a half dozen of them and told me to have a nice day.

yeah didn't think about going to a transmission shop to see if they had any. Oh well, I need some time away from the bottom of the Ty and the hard concrete floor right now :D
