Noise in rear

hi guys,

The other day I rebalanced the tires on my 92 ty and ever since ive had this noise that kind of sounds like a brake caliper grinding but when we put it in the air at Pep Boys, everything was free. It scares me because I drive it pretty hard and dont need something falling off at highway speeds +

thanks

Re: Noise in rear

i was thinking it could be axle related when I couldnt find anything wheel or brake related. I'll get someone else to look at it. I cant since im not a tech. I'm an Advisor

Get someone to ride in the back, ear to the floor and see if they can sort-of narrow down where the noise is coming from. I've seen what looked like a perfect wheel bearing make noise. You can also raise and pull a wheel and see if there is -any- movement at the axle flange.

Re: Noise in rear

OK I called a junk yard to get a price on a rear and the guy wanted to know what the ratio was. I told him I had a 92 ty. Did they come anything but the 3:42? I just need to ask for an 8.5 with 3:43 correct? In addition, where would be the best place to get the parts to rebuild?

Re: Noise in rear

Unless you're an experienced ring and pinion guy I'd suggest you take it to a shop.

Re: Noise in rear

I work at pep boys plus I'm in a muscle car club. I already have someone to do the job. Just looking at the angles

Check to make sure your wheels are on the correct front/back. 8.5 has nothing to do with width. Zr2 rear (8.5) is 4" wider than ours. normal 4wd rear is same width 2wd rear is 4inches shorter (2" each side)

yeah we are good there. Rims are in the correct position. I saw this when I balanced them. Pretty nifty saying front and rear inside by the lugnuts It might just be the bad rear coming into play.

Re: Noise in rear

I just went and checked my truck and at the top of the tire the tire should be -inside- the cladding by approx 1/16, maybe 1/8. Don't know the official number but track is about 58". If you are out beyond that by much something is haywire. I doubt that it's your dif issue but could be I guess. These are "C clip" axles so if things are that bad in the dif I think your wheels would be way off. Are both sides even on yours?

And IMHO if you're rebuilding the ring and pinion you might want to go ahead and have the outboard bearings replaced as well.
