No Ty Yet! But introducing myself!

Hello All!

My name is Brandon, Im 19 years old, and Live in Central Florida.

I've only had Performance Trucks, and I've been interested in building a Performance Truck.

I Have (well, Had, Im parting it out now) a 1987 Trans Am, With a ZZ502 - 502 Hp 567 Trq, and im sort of getting tired of it. I also have a 1972 Buick Skylark, But thats far from any type of performance, Buick 350, 2 barrel carb, ect.

I've always been interest in trucks, and my g/f has been nagging non stop (Guys are suppose to drive trucks! yada yada yada!) lol...

Well, I've looked into Swapping my BBC into an S10, or Blazer... Its possible, But just too much time/money/fabrication involved that I dont have the time to do, I have friends of the family, who are well able to do the work, but, i rather not get into another mess.

After parting out my TA, and selling my Skylark, Im hoping to find a Typhoon (I know i wont find a Syclone for the price) But, for around 6,000. With my luck, I wont be able to, Or, The ones for 6,000 Look like a train wreck, with 300,000 Miles... Hehe...

Which, if that happens, Im just going to buy an S10, and do a V8 Swap...

I have a mildly built 350 in my garage for it if I do, It was in my TA, took me 13.1 in the Bird, so im sure its enough for the S10.

If anybody wants to chat, I know im young, but i've done all the work MYSELF, with some help of my buddy, whose also my age, but we're both pretty hands on, and ready to take on the challenge.

My aim = BigBZZ502Skylark

Anyhow, Just stopping in to say HI!

Re: No Ty Yet! But introducing myself!

Bah, Was just a random number, hehe... I should have said "Outrageous Mileage"

For about 6k... I know I wont be getting anything near Mint, Thats a given.

My dad keeps telling me, Any Grand National/Syclone/Typhoon That I find for about 6k, Will be complete junk, and will be needing so much work.

Exterior Isnt a problem for me, 1/2 of my friends are experienced Body/Paint Techs, I was a painter at a Lincoln Dealership for a year and a half.

My problem is. I want the truck, I'll be entering college around augest. Is this maybe not ideal for me?

I guess what I am asking is, What type of work is a basic 6k Typhoon goin to need? new Turbo? Ect?

What should I look for when purchasing a Typhoon?

Such as.....

This is just random, not fact.

A Mazda Miata needs a new timing belt every 60k

An Lt1 Firebird/Camaro - The opti spark goes out about 75k miles, and is a 500 dollar part, Ect...

Will a 6k typhoon be a reliable daily driver? Obviously, They're already going to have quite a bit of mileage on them.

Thanks for any info!

It all depends on the truck and the driver as far as reliability goes. If it's junk and you torture it, you'll be walking alot. If the truck is solid and you keep your fly zipped up, they do pretty good.

As far as the price goes, there are really good deals out there. My Sy may not be a very good example in your case but I paid $3000 for mine running. Until the #5 injector took a crap and burnt that piston, I had no real problems with it. Even got 25-27mpg with it (read 6-sp).

Keep your eyes peeled and be patient and you'll find what you're looking for...

I've seen some "project trucks" that have all the parts included with the buy, but you have to install everything yourself for about 5-6K. The vehicle has a nice body and interior too, just needs to be reassembled...I'd look into that :2cents:

Re: No Ty Yet! But introducing myself!

i paid around 7k for mine just over 100k and it was okay, interior was excellent but the body needed some work. ran great till the injectors started crapping out. it'll be back on the road soon as i get a 3bar map sensor

Re: No Ty Yet! But introducing myself!

Welcome, and good luck finding a truck. Usually Sys are cheaper than Tys, which is wierd considering the number made, but they do have more creature comforts. The big thing to watch on these trucks is the transmission and front propshaft, since high-torque launches and AWD will lead to a quick death if you launch at every light. These trucks can be good daily drivers, since our friend used his Sy as his DD from day one, but he decided to get stupid and remove the W/G control, so the truck sits dead in our backyard with 139,000 on the clock. Once again, welcome to the board, and good luck finding a truck, since once you go for a ride in one you will become addicted!

Re: No Ty Yet! But introducing myself!

the deals are there - just keep an eye out for them - I have bought two tys for under $3000 that actually run and were not in bad shape - one wrecked not bad, and one repo - needs work, but for the $$$ saved, I'll be in it right.
I also bought my first ty for all the money (probably too much), and have had absolutely no driveability problems. The typical things that go wrong on any vehicle of the age went out, like exhaust, steering components, brakes wore out, etc. but nothing at all major. This one still runs and drives great.
