OK, truck was running the other night then it just died.

I have checked all the plugs and they were fouled so I cleaned them and put them right back in.
I have put in 2 gallons of gas so that's good.

Weirdly, the fuel relay seems to have died so I had to jump it. I can hear the Walbro running well. So the relay is good but why won't the ECM turn it on?

ECM is good - I get code 12 and the ALDL feed works. The Ostrich is seated and has no problems connecting with the truck/TunerPro and I can see battery voltage (I have a start cart), RPM, MAP, TPS and AFR. All telemetry is good.

I checked the ECM fuses and they are also good.

I replaced the IGN module thinking it might have failed.

I have just put a timing gun on it and tried to start it but got no timing from the gun. An HT lead directly to a sparkplug on the alt showed no spark there either.

What am i missing?

Coil?

I tried to find chart C-4 (HEI cicuit) in the supplement/Light Truck PDF but couldn't seem to find it. Any pointers?

Anyone out there have any ideas please?

my next move would be to make sure the distributor rotor is spinning when engine is cranking over . .

Yeah I have no doubt that it is. It was running fine, is still solidly in there. The cap didn't look too bad at all. Thanks! :tup:

Check all the wires jumping out of dist. To coil.

Do you have everything plugged in?

How about intercooler fuses? Under hood by alt. Just a thought.

My other thought was the center piece under dist. That may connect to coil? Charcoal material maybe graphite. I saw one break. I know they push in. So if you install cap incorrect your chances of knocking that out ...? Something I saw once.

Think a rodent chomped on a wire? Hah

There are only 2 wires to the coil from the dist. The 4-pin is dx.

There's the power from the harness which is showing 14v. I disconnected the 4-pin connector as that is the ECM and doesn't do anything until 400 rpm and then it takes over.

I have an MSD coil on there. Wonder if it's bad...

Ok. I just did the distributor test - got a spare, wired it up and got spark so the coil seems good.



Looks like I am taking the dist out tomorrow and replacing it!

Disconnect your Oil Pressure sender plug. Look at that circuit you will see why I said to try that. Test that circuit with sender disconnected.. (C129) page 42 Engine Wiring Harness/.pdf page 6 . You had the fuel pump going by jumping the (C128) 120-1-0 Gray Jumper that was GOOD! You will see on the circuit the other part that is missing. There is another circuit there (31-0.8 TAN). The oil sender has what looks like a double relay interconnected inside if you look at the diagram of it on the wiring harness drawing of the internal circuit.
Had one sender go bad before and it wouldn't fire the fuel pump relay or injectors and had me scratching my head.

Thanks Keith. The FP relay came back to life. God knows where the fault is. :dunno:

I'm going to swap out the dist next and see what I get.

It's more than likely the ignition module. It's dead not the whole distributer.

I swapped the IGN module out and same issue. I tested the timing gun at the same time and proved it works.

I tested the new dist and got spark. The old dist had no spark when I did the same test so I am going to swap the dist tomorrow.

I am optimistic!

Check the pins in the connector to your ignition module. They can get loose and create a poor contact. While it's connected grab the wires from the back side and see how much in/out movement you have in the pins. It's easy to overlook as you can't exactly get your eyes in the to see what's happening. If the pins are really loose in the connector that's a good indicator.

I've had a truck randomly die on me and lose spark, after replacing the ign module with 2-3 different ones I was able to kill the truck while it was idling by moving the two wires into the ign module.

Need to swap the mellonized end out then install the new dist. I don't think it was the connections to the IGN module as it's a new wire harness.

Hopefully have it done in an hour or so.

Good news. The truck runs and starts and sounds good. Annoyingly I am 180* out on the distributor AGAIN despite thinking I had that sorted :lol:

Anyway, thanks for reading. I will take a look at the dist and see whether I can save it. Shipping is a bitch to this side of the pond.

I feel very pleased to have her running again! It's got a billet distributor in there which was a gift from Bezerk. Excellent piece of kit.

one thing I noticed on my "other" vehicle is ...it had been worked on so much. It's not a syclone or typhoon but did have a starting issue. I had the cam syncronizer and sensor replaced at shop. Truck was ok for a little bit then it would just die. After I got under the hood...I found the cam syncronizer sensor plug was pulled off and put on so many times the wire was literally spiral wound. Further inspected it and wires with pins were loose barely making contact. That's because it was wound up like a cork screw.

I remember when I had the typhoon I put it back stock... The truck had rubber intercooler lines that swooped back around engine. I know for a fact my hoses rubbed the top coil wires and were weak. Even though your making progress and may be on the right track both something to look for. Thats great your running. Even better that those are willing to step up and help dial it in.

Is that because you had so many or because they turned out to be junk?
