Newer style electrical cruise control

Has anyone ever adapted the newer(non vacuum) cruise control unit from a 96-05 blazer/jimmy to one of our trucks.. I'm interested in doing it as it mounts on the firewall, eliminates the vacuum unit, and looks much cleaner overall.. I've found wiring diagrams for our trucks but I haven't been able to find any for the newer trucks yet.. If anyone could send me one that would be great..

Here is the module that I am talking about using:

Here is the wiring diagram for our trucks:

I plan on heading to a u-pull-it yard this weekend so hopefully I can pick up what I need from a newer truck then..

If anyone has done this or has any info on the newer CC systems that would be great..

Thanks,

Re: Newer style electrical cruise control

Thanks Wade.. I forgot to grab one of these when I was at the yard but there was some other stuff there that I wanted to pick up as well so I may be making a trip back..

EDIT: It looks like it would be rather easy to hook one of these up... :)

Re: Newer style electrical cruise control

you may want to look into a Rasta Cruise Control. They are used in Street Rods and Custom Cars.

Do you mean Rostra, Marty? - http://www.thecruisecontrolstore.com/

I'll be using their 250-1223 servo in my Chevy II. Compact, clean, and you can wire up whatever switch you want. Mine will be wired into a custom center console panel.

I finally got a couple of these modules.. I'll attempt to wire one in soon and let you know how it goes...

Re: Newer style electrical cruise control

Does anyone know where our cruise control module is located? Its number 11 in this diagram:

BTW, I've started working on a how-to for this.. Its very incomplete at the moment but here is what I have so far:

It's behind the dash to the left of #86 in this attached picture. It's a bitch to get to it.

Well I got the old module out(at least I hope this is it):

And this is the connector that plugged into it..

There is very little room to work where this thing is located.. Mine was actually above #86 in the diagram that Wade posted. Had to lay on my back and look up behind the dash.

Re: Newer style electrical cruise control

Does anyone know how many PPM(Pulses per mile) the VSS signal going to our cruise control module is? This 2nd gen module expects 4000 PPM...

Thanks,

Re: Newer style electrical cruise control

One of the first steps in trouble shooting the CC system on the newer OBD2 trucks.
Is to check the VCM. You may need the VCM from the truck you got the cruise control from to make this work.
BTW your PM box is full.
Diagnostic System Check - Cruise Control

Test Description

The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table.
 1.
Lack of communication may be due to a partial malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit or due to a total malfunction of the class 2 serial data circuit. The specified procedure will determine the particular condition.

 2. The symptom list in Symptoms will determine the correct diagnostic procedure to use.

Re: Newer style electrical cruise control

So this cruise control unit talks to the VCM via a serial data stream?? Do you have the troubleshooting flow charts for these newer CC systems? I do actually have a VCM from a newer tahoe but I'd rather not use it if at all possible.. My dad used to have a 89 full size chevy pickup with a TBI 350 in it.. That thing had an electric CC unit and I'm 99% sure that it did not have a VCM... Maybe I need to find an older electronic cruise control unit???

The style of cruise used on 88 thru 98 full size trucks will do what you are trying to do. The style used on the 99 and up will not, or at least it won't without a lot of doing. I learned this the hard way when I put the LS1 style motor in my old 94 truck. The two different styles look the same externally and use the same kind of cable and the same electrical connector so be sure what it came off of.

I was going to update to the newer style on my Blazer project but I figured as long as the vac style is still working fine, why mess with it.
