Ok I will, that confirms my suspicion that there isn't a drain plug. Thank you.

there is a plastic drain petcock located at lower left corner underneath the oil cooler lines

Re: New owner - help please (coolant temp & knock)

Thanks. As dumb as this may sound, I just noticed that my heater hoses are loose. Another forum member already pointed this out when he was looking at pictures of the engine bay. It seems that they bypassed the heater core? Could it have been leaky and it was easier to bypass than fix?
Shoot I sure hope the truck has not been overheated if that's the case. It runs hot as it is with a 160 degree thermostat. The two heater hoses are both disconnected, one with a rubber hose just freely sticking out and one with the bare metal tube. ?????????
There is also a cap at the back of the throttle body that has a pretty bad connection, it seems like a large vacuum nipple blocked off by a rubber cap. I'll have to fix that and see if the idle sound improves.

Re: New owner - help please (coolant temp & knock)

I just ordered a high-flow water pump. I am still looking for an aftermarket radiator for the Sy that is easy to install. Any suggestions?

When I changed the thermostat, I found what appeared to be a small piece of a broken spring inside the thermostat housing! WHAT THE HELL?????

I dont have a sy or a ty but have my share of overheating issues in other vehicles.

Have you checked your radiator cap? If the system does not pressurize it will not stay cool.

Air bubbles. If you do not bleed the system of air bubbles, this will cause overheating as well as the coolant cannot make contact with the hot surfaces inside your engine to absorb the heat.

Radiator fan. Fan clutch gone bad, self explan.

Thermostat. Sometimes a lower temp thermostat is not always a good idea to run cooler temperatures and I ahve even seen it overheat a vehicle that had did not have cooling issues before the install.

Water pump. There should be a weep hole located on the pump.

Timing. have you checked the timing on the truck?

I am no expert, especially when it comes to these trucks, but thought I would throw in my :2cents: Good luck and keep us posted.

Ok, so I pressure tested the system. There was a large leak at the thermostat housing gasket, I tightened the screws. There was also a small leak at the radiator cap. I will get a new one ASAP. An upgade radiator is in the plans (ANY SUGGESTIONS?), meanwhile an aluminium high flow Edelbrock water pump is on the way....

Re: New owner - help please (coolant temp & knock)

Temp fluctuates from 1/4 way at cruise in cold nighttime with A/C off, to 1/2 way at night with A/C off driving hard and boosting, to easilly creeping toward 3/4 (but never reaching it) when it's hot as hell outside and I'm driving hard with the A/C on low. Is this normal?

Your truck is stock, it shouldn't need an upgraded radiator. Get a scan tool on it and see what the actual temp is, the factory guages vary from truck to truck so don't by it reading.

Re: New owner - help please (coolant temp & knock)

My temp gauge was reading near pegged, but the truck was actually at 180. I changed out the temp gauge with one from a donor cluster and it reads accurately.

Get Datamaster from TTS Power Systems, or one of our vendors. I purchased mine from Detroit Turbo. It will tell you if the gauge is accurate, or if you are just chasing a gauge problem.

From an old post of yours....the intercooler runs normal 50/50 antifreeze water, or straight water if you don't need coolant; just run whatever you run in the radiator.

What's the knocking doing? Is it a knock or tick? As mentioned earlier, the fuel injectors are notorious for a tick tick tick that resembles valvetrain noise. It is normal, and can be corrected if you wish. Search for "injector noise" or something.

Re: New owner - help please (coolant temp & knock)

Thanks a lot. The "tick-tick" doesn't bother me as long as it's normal.
I would love to run straight distilled water instead of water since it works better in S.Florida, but doesn't the water pump as well as the IC pump need lubrication?
Also, would you recommend the Datamaster over the Tech 1? A Tech 1 provided me with lots of useful info, including that when my gauge is at the dreaded 3/4, water temp is actually 207 degrees.
Also that I reach 1 bar of boost (14 psi) eventually, although lazily. I blame the cat. converter.
My intake temperatures are as high as 170 degrees farenheit. How could this be? My 410 rwhp RX7's intake temps are around 50 degrees (f), and the air filter is sitting on top of the radiator hose.

I am somewhat relaxed about the temp. issue now, although it bothers me that some said their needles never exceed 1/4. So far I've replaced the thermostat with a 160 deg. unit, and changed all 3 coolant caps. Ordered a racing water pump and new hoses, and scheduled a coolant flush.

I can see now the need for improvements in several areas, even if one plans not to modify. The truck runs great right now, thank you all for your support.

Thanks. I am starting a new thread so I don't get off topic. I just ordered some bolt-on goodies, and I want to do it the right way.
