New Guy....Looking to get Typhoon..

Hi guys/gals.

New to the board.

Ive been wanting a Typhoon for about 3-4 years now. I am thinking of selling my 93 GMC Yukon 4x4 (2dr) and purchasing a typhoon sometime in the next few months.

Just thought I would see if anyone has any suggestions for me? Anything particular I should look for? Avoid? Or whatever you can think of?

Well, I work for the Post office so the Typhoon would be my daily driver but it wouldnt really get driven that much. (Have seperate car to deliver mail with)

Id just like to have a Typhoon as a reliable daily driver that I could dip into the 13's with.

Ive done quite a bit of research but still like to get opinions of some real owners. :)

Thanks.

I tried this and it didn't work. I'd take Jimmy's suggestion and get a cheap car to daily drive.

?????

I have my Jeep Cherokee 4x4 that I drive on the route for that. Its fine.

Well, forget that reliable part. :)

So what breaks on them? (Besides the 4L60E tranny) Ive had my fair share of crap..worked on plenty of cars...so thats not a problem.

Typhoon is a dream car to me......well, aside from a Lamborghini but the Typhoon is actually well within reach. :)

Ill have to rephrase that.....It really wont be a "daily driver".....I will probably drive it on the weekends and drag it during the summer. Not like im gonna drive it every day.

hey im lookin around for a ty. Do alot of you guys with them have to repair them alot? The ty will be my daily driver. Should i forget about it?

phoonTy

Truckless. For now.
i think you'll get answers on both sides. I bought mine last year for a real daily driver. but it already had 102,000 on the odo. so far, i've just done the recommended tune up, and IAC valve. so far, it's been just as reliable as the other cars i've owned (all GM).

There's also people, though, who've bought a sy or ty, and had lots of little things go wrong. then they ended up selling it because they got tired of trying to get it fixed.

if you find one you want, make sure you get someone that knows the trucks in the area to check it out for you/with you. that will save a lot of headache as they can tell you whether or not it's going to die soon.

if you like to wrench on your own cars, a Ty won't be a problem. if you're a jiffy lube kind of guy, a Ty is not for you.

ps...it's just a 4L60 with Sy/Ty specific parts, the 4L60E is the electronically controlled tranny.

well...you know what I meant about the tranny. :)

They break alot and easy. (My Yukon's did, but its good now.)

Well, I am building an S10 right now. Dropped a 355 Small Block Chevy I built into it.

Ive rebuilt 3-4 engines, rebuilt a 700R4, restored a few cars. I have never taken any of my cars to a mechanic. Do all the work myself.

phoonTy

Truckless. For now.
then it sounds like you'd be okay with a Ty. where at in CO are you? We've got a pretty good collection of Sy/Ty Owners along the front range. And I know there's at least 2 Ty's for sale in CO right now.

Good luck with your search. :)

The first thing i would do on a used truck is a compression test.If the truck hasn't been detonating and beat to death, you'll probably be ok.
Just remember, these are just about the fastest vehicle from 0-60 to ever come outta Detroit, and most have been driven accordingly. Not saying thats a bad thing, but if you beat on a sick truck you will eventually kill it.

The main thing really is Knock Retard. The proper plugs are imperative to keeping it running right.

IMO it would be better to find a one thats tight, then to have to go through EVERYTHING on one that's been beat.

There are plenty of guys around the country here with Datamaster that can check potential purchases for ya.

This topic has come up before several times, and you can find a lot more info by just reading everything on here.

it really all depends on how you drive and how well you take care of it.

1st syclone blew up the tranny at 102k miles lots of AWD launches will do this+ lack of changing the tranny fluid like I should have. also ruined the front diff also my fault had a seal go out and never did anything about it till to late.

in the 3 years I owned I changed plugs twice street raced the shit out of it and hauled moutain bikes drove to denver and back and basically never worked on it and it never left me stranded oh and almost forgot I blew up the propshaft into about 4 pieces after diving on a torn boot for 3 years.

new syclone only has 27k miles on it and drives like a dream, dont forsee any problems with it but it gets driven maybe once a month right now due to the weather.

the ty (57k miles) gets driven all the time, my roomate drove it while her lightning was getting a ram air hood and flames done and she never had any problems other than loose steering, and rear hatch struts not holding
I have a bit of detonation but I need to due a tune up on it that will cure that. I also jsut got the front suspension re-done thanks to the warranty I got for it. now it drives like a caddy a really fast caddy.

all around I have never been stranded or had anything major break for no apparent reason. I would say a sy or a ty is a good investment. this is my real experience, yours may differ.

side note bought a eclipse GSX and it blew up about 2 months later those cars suck.

later,
Josh

Yea, you can tell when an owner has taken care of it or beat on it.

Id like to sell my Yukon for around $9,000 to 10,000.

Im not one to beat on my cars, and I do alot of routine maintenance to keep them running good.

And since I like Typhoons so much, it wouldnt bother me to pour money into one. Its worth it to me.

Its a GM product, so thats a definite plus. Hell, any care you drive hard is gonna break no matter who makes it.

do ALL the work yourself...do not take them to the dealership, do not take them to a mechanic, knowone knows shit and the'll just make it worse...if you don't know something as here or your local syty friends...

Knowone knows shit about them to be honest! Ok maybe brian green knows a little! :D

Well,

I know how an engine works, ive built plenty of them.

I know how turbo's work.

I think I could manage. :)

IMO The tranny is going to go, these truck have great traction and make 400+ lbs stock and with a just few mods will make more torque then a 383 stroker motor. If you do the routine maintenace which includes doing spark plugs, cap & rotor every 5000 miles and are proactive when problems arise, (not fix them when I get around to it or ignore them like the average person) they can be relative reliable if you don't boost launch them every day.

First off nice name "The Zaz"(my last name is Zazzi and I used to get called that alot)

Second, I drive my Ty everyday and on trips really with out anything big happening. I got 107K on it and did all the "safety mods". I dont beat the shit out of it but I do have fun with it. If you do all the work yourself you should be in the clear. Just take the advice from the guys on this board. They know their shit and have been helpin me learn this truck inside and out.

Yea, the tranny would be the first to go.

I doubt I would be doing launches everyday.

Its a GM product, not Ford. hehe. Cant be that bad. (All I have owned is GM, Chevy...and Toyota)

Id like to have a car thats actually worth pouring money into. Id really rather not try and make the Yukon fast. lol.

Just wait till you do your first one. You will want to leave every light like that.

Yeah right, just wait

You will end up doing this. The money will flow like water. Make sure you have extra cash because these truck's can break if you just look at it wrong.

Take the responses with a grain of salt.

They are high maintenance - but go find a 90-93 blazer that runs well without problems too ;)

If you are a good wrench, patient, and really enjoy the truck when it's running good.. you'll fit in really well around here.

Some of the things you know about cars, you have to forget them to understand Syty's. They are a turbo beast, and different than other turbo vehicles in some respects.

Good luck with your search... use the syty.net board as a valuable asset...

ps: find me a job in the Colorado area and i'll be yer syty wrench/tuning bitch

I had an 85 S10 Blazer with the 2.8V6 and 700R4...... I know ALL ABOUT High maintenance. :D

Swear that thing was down every 3 months....lol

Shit, this sucks. Not sure what to do. Ive had my GMC Yukon for 16 months now and the only thing Ive had to do was replace a starter.

(I had the tranny rebuilt and had new axles/rear end put in. Has 3:73 with Eaton posi unit now)

But I did that out of my own free will. Auto Tranny's always go out. I could have done it myself but it was FREE. (Warranty)

Other then that....the Yukon has been an awesome vehicle.

I was wanting to install an ATI Procharger w/intercooler on it....rebuild the engine...maybe stroke it to 383. Throw on some nice wheels and call it good.

Either that...or a typhoon. :)
