New guy, building a Sy-clone

Hi everyone, Just checking in as the new guy. I am working on a Sy-clone build. It is a 1998 GMC Sonoma, that I am gonna be turboing (looking at PT-67 turbo).

Hopefully it wont take me that long to get it all done, and I am hoping to get away with about 10 grand since I will be doing almost all of the work myself (save for the machine work on the block  ).

nothing beats he real thing, i think you are better of buying a Syclone for 10K

Yeah really. Why not just get a real one for $10k?Is it going to be AWD,intercooled, and have cladding?More details.Just because your throwing a turbo on a sonoma or s-10 doesn't make it a sy-clone.

Damn the haters... ;-)
I think what our new friend means is that he is going to build a turbo V-6 Sonoma that will be similar to a Syclone in some ways. I dont think he intends to cobble a Sy together using a 1998 Sonoma as a base.

A turbo V-6 S-series is cool to me, especially if he does use a more modern body style than Syclones. Prob is he will have to make it faster than a Sy to justify the effort...

Its your money you can do what you want. Your going to need a pretty beefy transmission to hold up to a PT67. If its 2wd, its never going to hook up on street tires.

The computer tuning has come a LONG way on the newer 4.3 trucks.....HPTuners has a 3bar SD OS that you can run, that is VERY similar to the Sy/Ty look/feel of the computer....Couple that with tranny controls, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few inovative Sy/Ty guys swap to the newer ECM (even has real time tuning available now!!)

I personally think a nice turbo 4.3/6spd combo in a newer body style truck would make for a helluva lot of fun :D

...not to mention that if you're doing a decent buildup on either truck, Sy or not, you aren't going to use 90% of the OEM parts. I would actually rather see people doing buildups on non-Sys and leaving the real Sys for collectors who want to have nice stockers.

That being said, $10K isn't very much of a build budget. You could probably get away with a decent build if you get everything off of racingjunk and ebay, but if you intend to buy all the necessary parts from vendors to build, you're going to run out of money too quickly. My advice is to make up a spreadsheet with everything you plan to do and go from there...

Re: New guy, building a Sy-clone

ok, I hate to burst everyones bubbles, but I know it won't be a real sy. Lemme break it down for ya:

10K is for the motor, I do have a spreadsheet, and I have been building motors for 5+ years now. After totaling up everything (except for valve springs, locks and retainers, as well as the price for getting the crank cryoed cause I haven't decided on who to do it yet) the price comes out to $8692 (not including shipping as well).

So even with all of the stuff that isn't on the list yet, I don't think I will bust 10K. Although if I do bust 10K, it won't be by much.

that 10K does not include the 4L80E trans and performance build (I will be doing the tranny build myself), nor does it include the rear diff (which I will also be building myself).

All tolled with the tranny and rear end, it should come out to somewhere around 13-14K and be able to put down somewhere in the neighborhood of 700HP.

As for the people with the ECU questions, I will be running a MegaSquirt ECU. I have used these extensively in the past, and with the new processor that they have for them now, they rival any other aftermarket ECU out there, and I have used pretty much all of them at one time or another (Motec, F.A.S.T., Big Stuff 3 and several other piggy-back solutions as well.) and it costs WAY less while still meeting or exceeding them.

Any other questions feel free.

P.S.

I would actually rather see people doing buildups on non-Sys and leaving the real Sys for collectors who want to have nice stockers.

That's the reason why I am doing this to a Sonoma instead of a Sy. I do want to own an actual ty one day, but if I had the real thing, I would prefer to keep it as a really nice clean stocker.

Re: New guy, building a Sy-clone

although I do have to admit, I have only done a handful of turbo motor builds (hence going turbo on this one, learn more that way). but I have done alot of supercharged and N/A w/ nitrous builds.

Re: New guy, building a Sy-clone

The trans will be run by the Megasquirt General Purpose Input Output board (it's still in development).

The truck will be RWD running either a 9" rear end, or a chevy 12 Bolt rear (haven't decided yet)

Boosted Thrils is running an 8.5" behind is supercharged 4.3/6spd combo with good luck.

Keep us updated on how that tranny controller works out for you, I'm sure the 4L80E conversion guys around here would be interested in seeing the resutls!

Re: New guy, building a Sy-clone

I definitely will, I will admit though, the GPIO is not going to be nearly as easy to use as the TCI controller.

and about the 8.5 rear, this is going to be a daily, I want overbuilt, lol.

it is also getting a 4 link rear and air suspension (don't laugh, it will be set up so that I can put on coilovers for the track, lol)
