Re: Need opinions

Definitely keep it single-turbo... get creative with the intake plumbing... make it look like something NASA would have put together :) ... lots of plating, thermo protection, etc. ...make that V6 into something that will stomp those 512 and 572 big blocks!

A 700 will not hold upto a twin turbo V8 and and is even stretching it for a 10 sec Ty.

My truck is only potentially mid 11's and I've already blown one up in 2000 miles

Re: Need opinions

I not a big fan of v8 conversions in sytys.. I feel it kinda defeats the purpose of a syty why not just do a s10 you know.. but after having a few supercharged v8's I really want a turbocharged v8.. So I voted for the v8T option.. only because parts are easy to find, many part choices to choose from, easy to work on and any shop can work on them unlike our v6t motors.

Thats part of the reason for a V8. Heads, valve covers, cams, intakes are all so easily available. By the time I buy headers and a bigger turbo for the V6 I would be just as well off buying it all for a V8 and making more power.

Re: Need opinions

To me a big polished single turbo looks more impressive than a twin setup.

High boost is where its at.

I'm with Dave......High boost is more gooder.

Ask Jeff S and Mike H what the machine shop guy looked like when they told him "We're only gonna run medium to low boost.....you know 20-25lbs"........That look is priceless from what I hear!

Lets see, two turbos, = double the tuning problems, two breasts= twice the headaches, double your pleasure, double the fun, add a couple more cylinders and twin turbo the thing, if you have the cash, more is always a better thing.

Re: Need opinions

...seems your asking the following (if I`m reading you right):
1. Will my vehicle value dimish?...
2. Will I get a "oh-my-gosh" reaction when the hood is up?...
3. Will I get a 10 sec Ty with my modifications?...
4. Can I get it to perform during modification (as I can't do everything all at once)...
5. Time is not a factor, neither is tools, parts, or experience (however I do have a limited budget)...

IMHO (Answers):
1. Nope - you already changed the value by removing A/C, ABS, Cruise etc
2. Unless you hang around SyTy folks, most don't know these engine compartments
anyway (ie intercooler? turbo sizing? v6 or v8? awd? ground effects? lowered blazer?)
And most folks are impressed by layout, cleanliness, and whether it runs good
(ie Roberts Sy, Gerbers Ty, Ed's Sy, etc).
3. Anything is possible, but do you want consistent back-2-back 10sec et's or
"one" only run? Durability/reliability is much more difficult and costly.
4. Adding parts via piecemeal over time is easier to tune (ie baselining), but it also
cause breakage (fast engine -> broken tranny -> suspension/traction needs ...etc)
5. V6 parts are just too expensive (forged crank, bowtie block, etc) for bullet proof
bottom end. V8s are cheaper but are heavier. One can see the work Ed Hess
put into his Sy (twin turbo) and the work Robert put into his (single turbo) to
see what it takes to consistently perform (and perhaps be the fastest).
If cheaper is goal, then V8. If impressing SyTy.net is goal, then V6.
If complexity is goal then TT. If performance is goal, then copy Robert, Hoover's etc.

Lastly, if its not clear what you want to do with the vehicle (ie your goals)
decide if you like to "work" on the vehicle (engineer, design, fabricate, etc) more so;
or Race-only; or Show, or Cruise/Street race. There are a ton of guys who
start out with unclear motives and peter out (selling with a poor running
vehicle with pennies on the dollar). The fact your talking about a Ty and not
a Sy is a bit different also (shorter wheel base, more weight, less used
for Race-only vehicles, etc).

Summary: If you want the be the 1st to accomplish a particular look/performance,
then form your own designs. If you want to copy previous owner successes,
then figure out what it took them to complete their vehicles (money, time, parts, etc).
And if you want to compete with newly purchased muscle vehicles (z06s, vipers,
shelby gt500s, hemi challengers, 8-sec GNs etc) then rethink if a Ty is the best way
to win these matchups.

:stupid: I was going to write something like that last night, but I lost energy while writing it. Larry said it better than I would have anyways...

Well said. Im starting to lean toward single turbo V8. Its probably the cheapest and most durable route. My biggest concern with the V6 is I can only go so far before a bowtie build and thats not something I want to do. I show the vehicle, I street race when I can, I hit the strip a couple times a year, I cruise it on the weekends and occassionally drive it to work.

Heres what I'm thinking with the single turbo V8:

Im going to buy a bigger turbo for my truck anyways
Im having headers built anyways
I have the conversion parts already
Aluminum head V8 shouldnt weigh much more than a cast iron head V6
I can get the same amount of power without pushing the limits of the engine
V8's sound cooler

I dont expect to drive around in a 10 second ty all the time, but it would be nice to crank up the boost and use a little alky or race gas when I do want/need to go fast. Whether it be at the track or on a money race a few times a year. Im not looking to be the fastest out there, but definatley want it to be impressive. The crowd I run with when it comes to racing drive 10-11 second camaros and mustangs. A couple are faster but dont get them out on the street. It would be nice to keep up. I dont ever expect to beat hess or robert in a typhoon. Even with a V8 I probably wont push the amount of power that they do.

This might be next winters project if all goes well. If I tackle it now then the truck will be down for another summer. Maybe I'll use the summer to parts gather and then sell my engine this fall

Re: Need opinions

Just had a thought, let me know what you think and if it will work out:

Budget build with plenty of potential......
Vortec 5.7L, have to look into what they were in, truck/van whatever. I figured these already have a roller cam and vortec heads
4 bolt mains if they dont already
eagle h beams
.030 JE pistons
leave stock heads and cam for now, upgrade later to aluminum heads/custom cam
intake manifold like this but for a V8 http://www.raceprovenmotors.com/cart/product_info.php?cPath=21_152_193&products_id=445
custom headers/downpipe with undecided turbo size
2 more 50# injectors since I already have 6
syty ecm (what engine harness would work well on this?)
my trans for now, this engine shouldnt make much more power than mine if any
