Name this problem

I can't get over 2500 rpms, engine starts spundering and falling on its face. I floor it, and once it gets past 2500 rpms, the tach starts fluxing between 2500 and 2000. And of course it sounds really bad too. I can hear the turbo spooling fine and see it on the boost gauge, it holds fine. I just got a new TC and had the tranny rebuilt, and I can shit between the setting fine, so I don't think its that either. I replaced my plugs, oil, oil filter, and fuel filter recently, so shouldn't be those. My oil pressure is up around 50 to 60, which is normal for acceleration in the typhoon. I thought maybe the Ultimate chip had worked its way out of the board, so I checked it and it was fine. Cruise control works, so I think I have good vacuum. For the little I know about my Typhoon, everything looks ok under the hood, no loose wires or plugs.

So I put it on a computer at my friends shop, everything seemed to be ok except the TPS is only reading 3.72 volts when my foot is to the floor. I know, bad TPS sensor. My problem is that this sensor is less than six months old, can they really go bad that fast. I mean I did get it from the local dealership, so its not any aftermarket junk. The other problem would be how to adjust the new TPS sensor to get the closest to ... I think 4.5 volts?

So has anybody had this type of problem, and what did you do to fix it. Thanks, you guys are always a big help.

When was the last time you did a tune up? The problem you are describing is 99% of the time caused by an ignition problem. Replace the cap, rotor, wires and plugs. Make sure the plugs are AC DELCO CR42TS or NGK UR5 and that they are gapped at .032 - .035.

I would do the tune up first and then work on your TPS problem.

Plugs are brand new, wires were visibly ok, about six month old. The cap and rotor are about six months old also. The cat and muffler are about four months old. I have an electric cut-out and with the dump open, it makes no diffence in performance, but definately sounds uglier with the dump open.

definatly electrical....i agree with the sparkplug wire theory. take them off and check them even though they are somewhat new. check all grounds on the firewall that could go to the ecm.

Hey nick, anywhere local to get new plug wires if needed? Last time I ordered them through the net and they took forever to come in.

Ugh, I think mabe I'll check the ignition? If any of the components look or act anything out of the ordinary, they will be replaced after work today. I'll keep this post up to date for the outcome.

i buy the universal ones and cut them to length myself. i dont like the fit on the ones that are made for our trucks. i like all 90 degree boots and the stock sets come with two strait ones. any checker or autozone will have some msd or accel universal sets.

I knew someone would have to jump on that.

Mike Hood got me a set of Taylor Spiro-Pros PDQ when I needed some.

OK, new cap and rotor it is, and I'll make sure to check the wires as well. And I'll really make sure to check my spelling

Yup, and it takes just a few minutes of close proximity between a wire and downpipe and the wire is toast. At 03 Nats, I unknowingly broke the wire bracket at the pass side valve cover while futzing with the TPS re-wiring job. I was running the "Holley" group purchase wires, complete with heat-resistant 'socks' on the wires. A wire got loose and touched the downpipe. Even though I drove straight to staging lites (last 15 min of time trials, things had slowed down), it fell flat when I launched it. All of 5 minutes of running.

So after work I went and just replaced the cap and rotor as well as the TPS sensor and... nothing. Still the same exact problem with no change. I visually checked the plug wires without taking them off and they looked fine. I still need help guys.

Maybe I can make you sympathize for me. Look at this beautiful vehicle below, it just loves to be driven. Look at it just yearning to get on the road and show off. And yes, those are brand new wheels on my baby just waiting to tear up the road (18*9.5 fronts and 18*10.5 rears ZO6's powdercoated gloss black with 285-35-18's and 295-35-18's Prozy TS-1's).

Don't do it for me, do it for my Typhoon. So come on guys, help me find my problem... Please

Do you have a digital multimeter?

I'd check the resistance of each wire. They may look ok, but just yesterday I tested mine and they were all around 700-1k ohms, except for the coil wire which was 250k ohms.

I also use one of these on the #6 wire......

You can get them from Summit, part #DEI-010501

can you get the engine above 2500 rpm without flooring it? like part throttle?
try to hold it in first or second gear to get the rpm's up. if you can get the rpm's up this way, i'd say you might have a fueling problem. like maybe pressure dropping off, bad regulator or plugged up fuel filter. :-?

One or more could still be bad. Replace them anyways. If it doesn't help, then you have an extra set of wires for when you DO need them.

You're such a friggen goofball Robbie...

Call me this week, bring it over, it'll run like a raped ape within an hour...

P.S.) Better take advantage of this offer, as I will soon be dedicating my time to Nick's truck again. Racing season's coming up and we need to put in the reverse manual valve body and ratchet shifter, plus I need to tune the damn thing.
