hi all;

perhaps some of you have experienced this, so I will ask.

Have a mysterious vibration at highway speeds --- to describe it would be if you drove off the road and were running over the grooves on the shoulder. Not that loud though.

Just enough to make the rear mirror vibrate.

Any ideas?

Anybody experienced this?

iv got it too, im not sure exactly what it is, but i imagine that someone is going to post a reply saying its the propshaft. While we are on the topic of vibrations, i can feel a vibration from the floor of the truck right under the gas and brake. Anyone know what that is?

can you tighten the set screw that holds the mirror to its base?

Thats about the only way I could think.
That or take the mirror off and put a couple pieces of very thing tape on the back side of the mirror where it contacts the "base", then put it back on. May tighten it a little.

In a prev S-Series, mine was rattling from the 4 10"s behind the seat and then the whole thing fell off the windshield, so I left it off. One less rattle.

Vibrations... ahhhh... the love of vibrations.... heh...

Could be lots of things...

If you have an original propshaft or "old" style cv joint with the boot... I'd check it first... If it's worn instead of spinning close and compact it will be spinning outward... get to a high enough speed and you'll feel this as vibration..

Other possibilities...

Check fluid level in front differential...
Check fluid level in transfer case... replace fluid if you haven't done it in awhile...

check tranny mount bushing..
check differential bushing
check engine mounts

check tire pressure...
check uneven wear on tires..
check the rims for dents...


Have you had your vehicle towed recently?
All that fails consider doing what Rick krupa did and stick your vehicle up on a tire unsupported lift... have someone apply a small amount of throtle while someone underneather the truck applies a flathead screwdriver to the axle shafts to check for a vibration.... would indicate a bent shaft....

I've got a similar vibration. I don't feel it when I'm on the gas, or completely off the gas. I get it when I'm half-coasting, with just a touch of throttle. I can feel it under my feet, right about where "Syclone" is on my floormats, and it hums a little. That leads me to believe it's due to play in the drivetrain somewhere. Like when it's completely loaded or unloaded, it shifts to one side, but when I'm half coasting, it sort of floats with the play in whatever part it is.

I just had my propshaft rebuilt a few months ago, and my mechanic said the joints all looked good when he took them out for the tranny rebuild. The Sy's got over 123k now, and most of the stuff is still original, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was a worn out bushing somewhere or something...

race or get outta the way
check the bearing in the fan clutch. this can vibrate when its going bad also but may not give you any sound.

What ParTyBoy said worked for me and solved my vibration problem and the new Napa front axle CV is holding up good. Toe truck driver bent the axle while on the flat bed tightening the chains down with their winch. Just because you take out the prop shaft and don't have any vibration doesn't neccessarily mean it's the prop shaft being that without the prop shaft no torque is being applied to the front driveline.
