So all these people saying bad things about Jasper but my question still stands, ANY PERSONAL BAD EXPERIENCES with them? You all crack me up. You all knock them but do you have a reason to? I'm just hearing a bunch of I would'nt and you should'nt. WHY NOT? Please keep in mind that me removing or reinstalling this engine is not even an option. So if I get one that is built by Joe Blow hows it getting put in my Ty? Also, if I did get a Joe Blow engine and it did blow, whos taken it back out? Get my drift? I'm not a mechanic, nor do I have a mechanics set of tools. Jasper has been around a LONG time. They must be doing something right.

Jasper makes run of the mill engine. It works for a regular pickup or family station wagon, but not for a performance application of something running almost 15psi of boost when its stock.

You know why your not getting any direct answers to your questions?

The last 40,000 people that have asked about them actually took our advice and got a reputable build. I'd bet there are less than 10 people in the world that have put a Jasper engine in a Sy/Ty. I'd put money on less than 1 still running today without either a major retune, or lowered boost levels.

Just because nobody has done it before doesn't make it a good idea.

Jasper = Cast Pistons IMHO...

Cast Pistons + 15 psi = Short lifespan...

I agree that you should have an engine built by someone who knows what you are gonna do wit-it.

Guess he only gets online when he needs to update things?!?! Just kind of interesting that he posted today about that in the middle of this debate.

None-the-less...I stand corrected...Thats the first success story I've heard of using a Jasper engine. I've heard numerous accounts of other "standard rebuilds" going awry and not working at all for very long.

I'm going to stand by my opinion to not use one though. It's a high performance engine, not a standard grocery getter.

Why did you ask for help? Do you own a truck? I'm curious because your slamming your own vehicle, "frail", "finicky". Weird stuff. If you do own one, please listen to these guys. I'm a transmission guy and know about the Jasper trans which isn't an issue here, but as far as engines go. If you are asking, it's because you don't know or aren't sure and they tried to help and they have been VERY specific. GM was even putting the wrong pistons in the crate motors for these and it bit those guys in the tail. In the end, it's your money. If you do end up going with the Jasper setup even if it has the wrong pistons because of price, you may want to pull the electrical connector off the boost control solenoid so it can't go over 8 psi. You won't have as much power but it'll live a lot longer with the wrong internals. Take care.

Forgot something. If you read that thread about the guy with the Jasper engine doing well....it's not their parts. He supplied all the parts. They just were used as a machine shop. So kinda apples and oranges. That's an option though if you can get the correct parts though.

Just to give you another option...
I don't have a fancy shop or even a garage full of cool tools but I have done 2 engine swaps and a tranny swap here and I have most tools needed. I am 15 min east of StL and would be more than willing to offer you some help swapping engines if you want to get your hands dirty. I learned more by jumping in there and working on my truck that I ever did reading about them. You'll be working on the truck forever... if not fixing, it'll be mods to go faster so you'll have to learn sooner or later.

I can set you up with a reputable engine shop that will assemble the parts that you choose. We'll yank the old one out, have it rebuilt with correct parts and put it back in. I can't have your TY in my garage all summer but a few weeks would be fine. This fall before it gets cold would be a great time for me if you are not in a hurry.

Shoot me a PM if you are interested. Guys on here have helped me when i was a noobie with a truck in pieces, time to pass on the favors.

I once put 3 different jasper 4.3's is a 95 blazer within 4 months because the customer INSISTED on a jasper. Got paid good hours the first time and crappy warranty hours the other 2. They always seemed to come back with wiped rod OR main bearings. Jasper = crap :2cents:

Re: My Ty engine took a poo

SonomaGTlover, Appreciate your offer VERY much! Dont know exactly what I'm going to do just yet. But will keep your offer in mind. Any of you STL guys had Mike Christianson build a motor for you? I've been in contact with him about rebuilding mine for me. I know he knows his stuff for sure. He's the owner of the shop G&M off of Sappington Barriks Rd. in South County that always has Grand Nationals up there. I'm debating between him and a Jasper. I know Mike would build a better engine. But Jasper swears they stand behind there product 100% and offer the warranty. If I do end up pulling the motor my self I'm sure I'll have Mike rebuild it. Also if I do go the Jasper route they would be rebuilding MY BLOCK, not selling me one of theirs. Probably should have said that earlier too I guess. I want the Ty to stay numbers matching if possible. If anyone on here thanks I'm being an ass, I'm sorry. I'm just a VERY frustrated newb trying to figure a way out of this mess. Thanks for the suggestions and advice so far guys.

Re: My Ty engine took a poo

Mike is a good guy for a local. not many other mechanics that even know what a SyTy is around here.
He has had a few SyTys in and out of his shop that I know of.
They just tend to stay there for awhile until he gets around to it.
He is primarily into GNs so SyTys seem to take a back burner at his shop.

He does have the 3.8 Buick Sonoma though.
I believe he worked for PAS when they were building the GN so he had lots of access to the turbo 3.8 stuff.
Check out the sportmachines.com magazine rack for an article about his truck.

I would take Mikes work hand over fist above the Jasper. I don't care what they say or what their warranty is.

Re: My Ty engine took a poo

Well guys, I believe I'm going to have Mike Christianson rebuild my engine instead of Jasper. He's going to switch it to splayed four bolt mains for me with the rest being pretty much a stock rebuild. Hopefully it holds up pretty well because it is going to leave me about tapped out. Could someone tell me exactly what I need to purchase to be able to datalog what my Ty is doing once rebuilt? What cables or whatever will I need and stuff? I dont know a damned thing about tuning or running dataloggers and stuff! Spell it out to me please. I want to know exactly what is going on in the engine when I get it running again so I dont end up needing aother rebuild right off the bat. Appreciate any advice on this.

Thanks, Bobby

Re: My Ty engine took a poo

Datamaster is a program that runs on a windows laptop and plugs right into your aldl port.
Tells you all the sensor readings as well as boost, knock retard, spark advance, etc etc etc.

http://ttspowersystems.com/

Or start learning to do your own tuning and run the TunerProRT software and get an ostrich emulator.
www.moates.net

Your best tool is going to be to LEARN everything you can while Mike is rebuilding it.

Re: My Ty engine took a poo

No, I'm having a separate shop pull the engine and reinstall it after the rebuild. What you want for the data cable?
