Again, running around........started died on me. This is the 4th starter.

This time around I'm going to try the heatshield. Anyone else have any suggestions as to why the starter keeps going out?

It's not the wire that is a problem, as that's been updated, but the physical starter is going out. I've had to replace the starter itself now for the 4th time.

Heat is brutal on starters.
If you let it get cold, does it work again?

Spend the extra $$ and get a mini starter that allows you to rotate the solenoid so that it is away from the exh. manifolds. Then wrap it with a starter blanket.

Before, when it got cold, it would work fine again, but this time, it's just dead. It's drawing current like mad when I crank it over, so I know it's getting power. I'm going to check it again with a test light tonight to see if I have an electrical problem, but every time we've changed the starter, it works great. So I dunno. But I'll take that mini starter idea and see what I can do.

Ditto... Do the mini starter and never have to worry again as long as your wiring doesnt have issues. Makes a cool/racy pro stock car cranking sound too.

mini starter is the only way to go IMO. Get a good one and you will be done. I have them on both my trucks. I got the powermaster, 9512, about 250.00. The thing spins fast! I use to have a 100 dollar cheap model, it did not work out as well. Get a good one. jack

i know it sounds dumb but like thaet other guy i have to reccomend a hot shot relay, i had gone thrugh 2 or 3 starters before i got the relay, it worked, i havent had to replace a starter since, try it 1st it is 20 bucks as opposed to 250 or so starter, it just may work!

I can tell you that before I put the HotShot Relay on, the dealer diagnosed a faulty starter and the prior owner, in fact, put one on before I would buy it. I don't think the starter was bad from the beginning.

Anyway, I should have said that my diagnosis of a bad starter was incorrect.

A F**d remote starter relay (any auto parts store - about $15.00) and the standard late model S-10 starter relay heat shield ($5.00 at you local GM dealer). A jumper to your old purple wire terminal on the stock solenoid from the main lead from the new solenoid.

You will not have to think about it again.

Stock AC Delco replacement starter and a heat shield has worked for years, for me. Heat is the enemy, protect whatever starter you get from it and success is almost sure thing...
I personally do not like the hot shot and have managed without it.

I got it from Jeg's. I recall some prior posts with diagnosis and installation techniques on this forum. Do a search and you should find it.
