My son is 16 and of course surrounded by kids with Import Tuner Cars(Civics/Integras etc.). He wanted my 99 Ls1 Z28 6-spd but I didn't like the fact that it was strictly RWD. So I was tellin him and one of his friends about the badass cars of my time. Of course there were Corvettes,Camaros and Mustangs but we were interested in the sleeper cars/trucks of my generation,Syclones/Typhoons and of course GN's. I showed him some video on Youtube of Syclones runnin 8 sec quarters. So I have been shopping on Autotrader and pricing Sy/Ty's. Can you guys tell me what was the best year of production? Any weaknesses with engines/drivtrain etc? Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Syclone - 1991 only
Typhoon - 92 and 93
Main difference in 92 and 93 Tys is the interior... leather/cloth vs full leather
Weakness points - tranny, front propshaft, poor ignition
The trucks are maintanence whores, and they arent all that cheap to get going fast. You can do 12s on about a 1k budget, but that doesnt include the money dumped into the truck to have it running perfect first. Once they get going fast, they tend to spend time on jackstands too.

Ahhhhh Dont buy you kid a Syclone or Typhoon. My gosh! They are the most high maintenance things I have ever seen. My Syclone has 40,000 original miles on it. I have replaced:
CD player
fuel pump
wires
plugs
intercooler pump
TPS sensor

Remember too, that these are not at all like the import tuner cars that are popular these days. You can order any of 1,000 parts from 10,000 magazines, bolt them on and go with an import.
3,000 Syclones and 4,700 Typhoons doesn't lend itself to much aftermarket support should you try something that doesn't work and break something you weren't planning on (transmission for one). Each SyTy seems to be unique and require it's own combo and fine tuning to get the most out of it.
I daily drove my truck for 2 years and it never left me stranded... But it is basically bone stock and now that I don't, it's really starting to show it's age. When daily driving, I did a full tune up yearly. And once something goes down, it's that much harder to get it back on the road. :lol:
Don't get me wrong. They can be a blast to own for sure... but do as much reading and searching here on the forums for "reliability" and make sure you are absolutely aware of what you would be getting into. :tup:

I got mine when I was 14, didn't know crap about working on cars could hardly change oil. If he has time and motivation and someone that could help out it could be a fun car, but it's not cheap, and every penny I make goes to my truck. I Love it though. I'd look into a wrx or other fun AWD car. When mine was RWD for a while I would slide it around corners and do burnouts just to have fun, and I'm sure almost any 16 year old would do the same.

Its not a great first vehicle, especially for a teen. In stock form they don't that brake great or handle that well (same goes for GN, but they handle worse). IMO buy your son a reliable safe car and let him get some expereince. (if it means a tuner car that does 0-60 10 sec so be it), he will have plenty of time to learn about cars later than life. A fast car and teenager is recipe for disaster, at best he might lucky and get some speedign tickets.

Don't let these people scare you off. If you don't abuse your Ty/Sy, it will be just as dependable as any other car on the road. If you are out racing every other day, I would expect it to break. I know several daily driver Ty's that have required little more than preventive maintenance to keep them on the road.(Including mine!) These now have over 100k and still going. :tup:

:cheers: When I had my TY it was my daily driver and was veryyy reliable. Like 122K on the clock too. All I did was routine maintenance and never abused it. The only reason I sold it was because I needed something bigger and I had a little boy. If your son does plan to take care of it and respect what he has, then everything should be fine. But if he just wants something to hop in and abuse, doing no maintenance then I'd look to a different vehicle.$Hot-Rod$ said:

the typhoon/syclone is not the kind of a rig for a kid to learn on. if you want power, go with a rear wheel drive, more predictable when it gets squirrely, and much cheaper to fix

Plus, parts are expensive as hell for the motor, when you can find them....i'd say go with something front wheel drive that has a ton of aftermarket parts available for cheap....lots of competing speed shops and websites out there to drive prices down

If you want to get your boy a SY, then get him one. I would have loved it if my dad bought me one when I was 16, especially sicne it would have to be new. I will say though that a good point was made about the body parts. Very expensive and hard to find if he wrecks it. Other than that, keep it stock and let him drive the wheels off of it. Its already fast enough for a 16 year old so you guys can do some nice male bonding upgrading the suspension and brakes.

Get him a Volvo 740 or 850 turbo. Not terribly fast, but still quick, and they're built like battleships. A Turbocoupe would be good too, or any other mass-produced 80s/90s turbo ride. Just be prepared for the high gas prices, as boosted vehicles need 92-93 to be happy.
