Mufflers ARE power robbers

I dont care hwat anyoen says now, I just put on my new muffler and I have to say it takes quite a bit away from spool time and just plain power. I ended up getting the Warlock muffler and havent gotten my elec dump yet but cant wait now. It sounds pretty nice but it really did affect power.

Why not cut it in half and weld it up with a 3" pipe straight through . Just because its illegal to have no muffler , you dont need no muffler to be legal .

I don't know much about Warlock mufflers. Are they a straight through design? Straight through muffler will have minal restriction. The ATR and Borla Racing mufflers, I have looked at in my hand I don't see how they would cause any restriction at all.

i have a 3" magnaflow straight through muffler and opening the dump gave 30rwhp on the dyno.

The warlock has a cap you take off. When hte cap is on it diverts the eaxhaust through a typical muffler type set up. Its pretty cool. I bought specificly so that I can bolt my elec dump and have the best of both worlds. I can post up a pic with specs if you guys want to see one. I hear they rot out fast so Im keeping my fingers crossed there. Now I just have to get the dump. It actually sounds pretty nice, kinda like a V8. With the cap off it sounds just like it did before I put the muffler on so I definately will be getting the dump soon, I just cant afford anymore tickets, my last one was a $500 fine and $400 was suspended if I dont get anymore for a year.

I have the stainless style ATR used to sell. Dynomax Ultraflo I think it's called. It's 4" diameter inside the muffler. Straight through design. No way a 4" muffler is gonna restrict a 3" pipe. It drones a bit but really drops the decibles down.

Edit:
I think this is it here:

That the muffler I currently have on my truck and love it.

Get the one like we have and it won't rot out and you won't need the dump. Mine's been on there 8 years now. Still looks like new.

How would I not need the dump? The whole point is to go from having a quiet muffler (to avoid the local muffler nazi's) to having straight through. If your car gives a hint of having moddified exhaust, they write you a ticket. Im just plain tired of getting pulled over for nothing. Thats why I went this route. You can see here why it would be appealing. How is the ATR better? Ive never looked at one.

Re: Mufflers ARE power robbers

ATR style that we talked about is 4" inside diameter. No back and forth stuff like the one you are showing a pic of. You are putting a dump type setup to accomplish the same thing that the Ultr Flo already does AND it's quiet. See what I'm saying? You've already paid for a dump and the Warlock so you probably are gonna do the Ultra Flo anyway.

But once the dump opens its straight through. And when you go WOT with the ATR I cant imagine its as loud. I could be wrong, never ehard one in person.

Re: Mufflers ARE power robbers

what george is saying is the ultraflow provides the same performance gains with half the noise.

providing your muffler is a straight through design the only performance gain to be had with a cutout is if you place it before the cat.

Re: Mufflers ARE power robbers

I normaly run the Dynomax Super Turbos or Ultraflow's. Both are nice and quiet. We are currently using the ATR muffler/cat back system that came on our Typhoon when we bought it. Not sure how it flows realy but it's got a decent tone and seems to be ok.

I like to have it quiet in the truck/car so I can hear if somthing is going wrong. With it opended up your not going to hear somthing going wrong. Just my.02cts

Re: Mufflers ARE power robbers

Mufflers most definitely are power robbers.

In my Dodge Spirit R/T, I picked up 28fwhp peak (20-25whp on average from 3k rpm to 7k rpm) with a cutout at the downpipe. The rest of the exhaust was a 3? mandrel bend setup with a 3? Dynomax Ultraflo muffler. It blew me away how much a seemingly great flowing muffler could rob almost 10% of the power going to the wheels.

Oddly enough, I have the same muffler in stainless form on my Sy. Though I haven?t dynoed it yet, the seat of the pants meter (all I have to go on right now) tells me zero gains with the cutout open. Very strange. Maybe the stock chip has something to do with it?

Re: Mufflers ARE power robbers

I have no CAT and dont plan on putting one in. I have one laying around for emissions but they did away with it here so I imagine it will sit for quite some time. Thats why its feasable to put the dump on the muffler. Sorry George, I was confused why you thought that would work better, I shouldve said I dont run a CAT. If it were up to me I wouldnt even have a muffler but like I said, tickets. I drove around some last night and its real quiet, didnt even have to turn off when getting next to a police car.

Re: Mufflers ARE power robbers

I had a 3" cat and a 3" Ultra flo that was 4" internally on my Syclone that Jesse bought from me. I LOVED that combo. No neck down in front of the cat and never had overboost issues that plagued a lot of others. I think I was just lucky. We aren't currently plagued with testing here so I may omit the cat and just run the Ultra flo on the ty when I put in Jeff's 3" downpipe I got. If you ever need to replace your muffler again, get an Ultra flo and you'll see what I mean.
