Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Finally got some more stuff done. Lately I have been messing around with the accessories. Vasplieon posted a new way to do the AC delete. I always liked my way with the tie rod for an adjuster but after seeing his thread I thought damn that would be nice to just use a tensioner on the ALT bracket. So i set out to do this and realized that in his thread, he left out some pretty important details like the fact that you need to shave the face of the ALT bracket down a little to make the pulley truly line up with the others. I asked which ALT to use if you go with a bone yard part. Never got an answer. So end up getting an ALT out of a 92 Cadillac Seville. These are rated at 140amps from the factory. It is big!! I brought it home only to realize this is not what Vasplieon used. So I had to make a bracket for it to mount it to the other bolt hole on the ALT bracket.
Here are where the holes are drilled.

The bracket I made attached to the ALT

Tensioner bolted on

This bolt goes here...

Like so

Power steering pump and pulley installed

Finished with belt

FWIW, I fully intend on ditching this ALT and its bracket I made. I just wanted to get something in place for now and I already bought the wrong ALT. The stock one fits with a 56" belt just so you know. If anyone knows what ALT you are supposed to use for this please let me know its applications so I may acquire one. That's it for now, Once I sell my ZR1 wheels and SYTY lower for Vortecs I should have most of my bucks for fuel system. I will also be plumbing everything for hydra boost over the next few weeks.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Everything is starting to come together a little. Finally got some big checks in and am starting to stock pile fuel system components for the truck. For now though, I got some valve cover spacers and am using them with my Vortec covers. What I have been busy with this past week is the transmissions cooler/fan set up. I was going to toss them and run frame mounted coolers but decided why buy more crap when I already have the stuff I need? My biggest complaint was the lame mount I had for these previously so I decided that since everything is a part I would try and make a nice mount for this stuff. Here are some pics of what I came up with.

Here it is painted

Cooler mounted

Scoop mounted over the cooler using the same studs

Here is the back side where the fan will go

Here is the fan mounted on there

Here is the whole thing

This is it mounted on the truck where the old heat exchanger went

May be hard to tell but here it is with the bumper on. I noticed it waves a little on the left, not sure how to fix that

All in all this went pretty smooth. I test fired the fan and this thing mounted the way it is pushes some serious air. Before it was pretty weak, it has some good suction too.
I have my 75# injectors on the way and my TYPHOON plate and fuel rail with Aeromotive AFPR coming so hopefully next week I will have more to post up. Next I will probably order my A1000 with controller and depending on how much money I have after that I may start putting fittings and hose together.

lookin good mike !! can't wait to see this thing in action .

Me either. I have to say though that this whole thing has put many things about performance/vehicles in to perspective for me. We are not rich by any means but we are far from poor. I would say we live pretty comfortably. I do have the money build and maintain this truck, I DO work for it. One thing that has crossed my mind several times throughout all of this is the fact that once you really start increasing power, you WILL break shit more. If you race your vehicle every weekend or evening and daily drive it and you figure that motor should last you 2-4 years, to spend $4,000 every few years seems kind of stupid unless you have money just sitting around. Makes me kind of wonder why the hell I went through all of this. I hope this thing lasts me 5+ years. I figure after this all I have to really do is go 4L80 and I should be done with it. Then paint of course.

Starting to make some more progress. Tonight I tore in to the wiring harness and damn, glad I have a lot of patience for this stuff. I am pretty confident I am doing it right. Here is what I have thrown away

Here is the rest of the harness

Also, I got my upper intake plenum done. I bought the Typhoon plate from Scott, "UR50SLO". All I can say is WOW!!! the plate is so gorgeous I didn't even want to mount it on the engine. Here are pics

I got my 75# injectors in and am waiting the fuel rails and AFPR to get here. Once I get those, I should start moving the fuel system down pretty fast.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

So what oil pump part number did you wind up using?

Its just a standard oil pump. I ended up taking the pan back off after all the pics because I used the wrong pick up tube. After some thought, I decided to use a bracket for it. I highly doubt I'll have a failure if thats what youre thinking. Motor is balanced and I dont run solids.

No it is not that at all I am just trying to collect part numbers for the oil pump and pick up for my build. Did The second pick up you purchased work? I know that the HV pump is usually longer than a reg pump and was wondering about the pick up you are going to use. Thanks.

The second tube did work perfect. I just brought the stock tube with me, which I should have done in the first place, and matched it up. Unfortunately I have no numbers. Just went to AZ and got one.

So you did not use the moroso pick up tube?

I did use the Moroso tube. I just got the wrong one at first. I wish I would have gotten the damn part number for it. I could probably get it if you need me to.

OK here we go. I got the fuel system in but had a ton of wiring left to do so I have been tackling that over the last two weeks. I finally got it done though. At least to the point where I can stuff the harness back in the truck. Here is what I have going on so far.

Made these connectors for the coil harness so I can mount it in the cowl

Mounted MAP sensor, firewall feed through for coil wire

In the cowl

This junction box will replace the old one on the passenger side. Still not sure how I will run the thick cable there yet. It will then go to a fuse block where i will run the wiring out to the e-fans

Here is the PT67GTQ I just bought

Harness dumbied in to place

A long the left bank

Coil hooked up

Not sure this is where the solenoid will go yet either

Coming together
Here is what is left before I spend more money

I am getting really excited and antsy. This project I think is coming together very well and in a descent time frame. Once i get fuel done, I am thinking about another $1k before I am done. That should come rather quick. All that is really left after fuel system is radiator, IC piping, new E-fans, wee bit more wiring, just little stuff really. Also forgot to point out I got my red fuel rails installed with the 75# injectors.

Re: Motor rebuild for 92TY#73

Thanks guys. To be totally honest, I am really enjoying building this thing up and buying everything for it, but for some reason, lately I have been getting somewhat intimidated by it all. I'm not sure if it's because it will be about 2-3 seconds faster than it was or if it is because the amount of money I have spent? All I can say is that something tells me I wont be driving this thing like I used to. I also am starting to feel like I built this all for nothing since I am not doing the 80e, rear end, coil overs, and all the other crap that goes along with a bigger build. I have a feeling I will cooking all four of my Sumitomos with ease and will never get a decent launch until I go with drag radials. This would mean buying another set of wheels that I really don't want to have to do. But we'll see. All in all I can't wait. Oh and forgot, the MSD set up like Ry said, that would have been smart.
