Motor mounts, HELP!

We dropped the engine in yesterday. The transmission is bolted up, The first go round, we got the bolt in the passenger side motor mount, but the drivers side was 3/16 to 1/4 inch off. When I put the motor mounts on they were not marked right or left, drivers side or passenger side. So we swapped them side to side, and tried again. This this time we were even farther off. So we swapped them back. We decided to put the drivers side in first since there is alot more room to work on the passenger side. When we got the drivers side bolt all the way through, then we had the same problem on the passenger side, it was off the same 3/16 to 1/4 inch. :banghead: We loosened the bolts on the mount to the block, and the transmission bolts...... same problem :banghead: This time the front of the mount will line up perfectly but the back is off the same 3/16-1/4 inch. The manifolds and crossover are on so I cant put it in from the front

So what should I do now? Should I slot the mount to give it more play to get the bolt through? Thats really the only idea I can come up with. I'm open to suggestions, what do you guys think?

OH, btw, these are moroso solid mounts. The mounts on the engine had been removed, but the mounts on the frame had not been removed.

Re: Motor mounts, HELP!

Some people are running only one solid mount on the driver side & a stock one on the pass. I don't know if this will help.

Re: Motor mounts, HELP!

My solid mounts didnt line up at all, I had to drill them out and elongate the holes to make them line up.

Re: Motor mounts, HELP!

I left the plates on the frame slightly loose and lined them up, then tightened the plates to the frame

So this is not that uncommon to have the holes slotted. But doesn't that allow for some movement of the engine? Seems to defeat the purpose of the solid mounts. I'm assuming that you haven't had any problems with yours, correct?

I thought about that, but the nuts on the bottom of the frame look like a real SOB to deal with. So I was leaving that for a last resort.

I did not read this part, yea your going to have to get the correct frame pads or its never going to work. I was talking about driling out the mount it self where it bolts to the frame.

Solid motor mounts with stock frame pads? Didn't think that would work (need frame pads from JS/Turbotime or somewhere else).

Edit: Found the post I was looking for regarding this:
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=58270&highlight=solid+mounts

I'm not sure if the pads are stock, when i bought the truck the engine was out of it. The frame pads were already installed so I don't know whether they are stock or not. As far as I know, these mounts were on the engine when the previous owner pulled the engine to beef up the bottom end.

Correction: The pads are NOT stock.

Re: Motor mounts, HELP!

When i put on my poly/steel aftermarket mounts( steel on the frame ) i had the same problem! What i did is use smaller 8 grade thru bolt, that gave me room to make it work

Hmmmm.....haven't thought of that. Have you noticed any negative affects from it? Will move any at high rpm's?

this is what i did as well. you can get to the nuts on the passenger side easily, all from the bottom, or atleast i did. but i have headers so they blocked me from going through the top. i did all of the drivers side from the top. the only hard one is the top bolt on the drivers side. with two people it goes alot quicker, one to hold each wrench. do you have a pic of the frame pads that are on the truck?

Re: Motor mounts, HELP!

Agreed, leave everything you can as loose as possible until you get them all started, cake from there. Undersides of the frame pads aren't THAT bad from the bottom (a pain, but do-able). Loosening the frame pads a little will grant you a lot of play.

Re: Motor mounts, HELP!

Alwas scribe A line around the stock moter mounts before removing. I did that & they went in like butter. Vary easy..
