Money Question...

Re: Money Question...

it's ashame I don't have a bigger garage and more time. I'm not far from you and I can change these motors with my eyes closed... have done so 4 times already. I really need my house with a shop!

Re: Money Question...

So its obvious i may need to buy some rings and maybe some valves and bearings... i see them all on the sytyperformance site, but im on a rly tight budget. Does anyone have the parts cheaper? Im looking for the lowest price without sacrificing the quality of the product...

When you rebuild the engine make sure you replace the main bearings. Main bearings are the last components to receive oil upon startup. Good luck.

Re: Money Question...

You really need to get the motor out and bring it somewhere to get freshened. There are a lot of things that should be gone over and cleaned up while it's out. You could take the chance and replace parts and put it back together but its risky. Don't order any parts until you can get it out determine with certainty what's causing the low compression. Reagardless of the issue I would change the rings and bearings.

Re: Money Question...

just do the newer engine mod, it's a cheaper faster vortec headed engine, wich you can throw low boost at to get the same number as 15psi on your stocker.

Re: Money Question...

yea I mean i have a few freinds that are mechanically inclined, I just keeep hearing about how weird these engines are so I'm weird about having them do the work on it as if it were a run of the mill 4.3QUOTE]

If they are familar with using tools and can read it's not that hard, even if they have only worked on jap crap. There is a guide somewhere online and I have it saved in my favorites, when I get home I will post it unless someone beats me to it. IMO if you have the engine apart replace wearable items, rings- oil pump-bearings-etc. Check summit or jegs for standard parts. some things are universal between 4.3 v-6's and small block chevys. Try to find a decent small machine shop, I've found they are the least expensive. I had my engine bored .030 over for $110 from a small local reputable shop. If I had the time I would help but I have too many of my own home projects plus a Ty of my own to rebuild. Good luck and like BoostedSUV said get it out , inspect it and go from there. Good luck man.

Re: Money Question...

I would like that guide if you can post it for me. Should I go with normal summit parts? I mean it wouldnt b a better idea to go with someone on here? like sytyperf. or detroit turbo or something? Who has these engine parts for the best price? sorry guys i kinda feel like a begger, but Im strapped, and I know someone has gone through this and knows where money can be saved...

Re: Money Question...

Whatever you do don't cheap out and take short cuts... It will only cost you more in the long run. Maybe you're bettr off selling the truck and getting yourself a reliable daily driver. Sucks but sometimes you have to do what you have to do

Re: Money Question...

i would rebuild the stocker. i bought a block and crank (brand new crank that someone bought and never picked up) for $150. i could not have salvaged the rest of my internals, but if you could, you could save. shop around, s-series forums should have a ton of 4.3's with people doing swaps or place a want ad or call local and semi-local shops to see what they have.

i had a 98' motor, complete but didn't want the hassle of the swap. if you need a 4x4 pan for one, i have a great one i could weld a bung in for your turbo oil return. as an option.

Re: Money Question...

I would proposition a local engine builder if he can/would do a low budget rebuild and ask if you can make payments - you can give him the title to the truck as collateral until all the payments are made.

I think he already has a loan on the truck. If so then he does not have title.

Re: Money Question...

money can be saved if you don't have funds on a newer style vortec engine. don't be stupid and throw money towards the block, and thinking you have yourselve a good rebuilded engine, because you won't stock rods are weak as hell. why would you want to throw let's say 1k in new parts, nd still have a weak stock block? it's up too you but you really need to reconsider the newer style vortec mod. with stronger rods and pistons. more compression so should be better wise for feul economics, and alot more power on low boost.
$700.-

well the issue there is you don't know what the condition of the vortec engine when you buy it out of a salvage yard.

The best thing for him to do is to try and get a DD. these trucks are old and fragile. Tring to use one as the DD and the weekend warrior is very bad.

Get a DD then save some cash and rebuild what you have with nicer stronger parts. In the end you will know exactly what you have under the hood. The vortec are great but you just don't know the condition of it.

you also never know what you get buying a used DD. it's up to him. but comparig a 500 bux engine too a good build bottem end for 5k..if he doesn't have 1k now, he won't have 5k for the DD and the rebuild within a year.

Dang i didn't know it took 5k to build a good bottom end

He could get a cheap DD for way way less than 5k . maybe a grand.

it's all up to him. I have been in that same situation before. when i first bought my GN back in 98 it was my DD and the weekend warrior at he same time. Well about a 1.5 yrs later i blowed the engine and didn't have anything to drive at all.

I was forced to get a really cheap beater and fix the GN the correct way. But i also learned that you can use the hot-tod as a DD.

you want some better rods pistons and machine work. etc etc. gaskets, get the heads redone. not even speaking of a cam or 4 bolt mains, that stuff with the bore will set you back a bit over 2k.

Re: Money Question...

i just sold my DD beater 94 civic for $600..

i'd help but i have my own pile of work to do.

My advice is get a daily driver.. make money at your job, then spend money on the typhoon when you have it. Ask if you can park it inside the garage so it is protected from the elements.

I can pull a motor in an afternoon, however so far it has taken me years to put one back in.

the advice of buying a newer 4.3 is good advice, i'd take it..
I do believe hood tuned performance might be able to help you as well, you might want to contact him directly and ask about a motor.

good luck.

Don't you think thats alittle overkill? he just want a decent running engine not a 10 second build.

i can see a nice set of pistons/rods. but i think 4 bolt caps is really not needed till at least 500hp.

Most crank failures are a result of piston/rod failure. not due to 2 bolt caps.

but that is another debate.

i'm not sure what you are after. but if you read correclty. i'm not saying 4 bolts are needed. just the vwhile you're at it stuff. wich you tent to fall in more easily doing rebuilds like this.
