Modded WRX

TYTILIDIE

METH HEAD
ran into a guy with a modded WRX last night. He told me his list of mods which included a bigger turbo, I cold swear he called it an FV4? Something wierd like htat. Anyway, it just wasnt enough, although I was impressed he wasnt all that far behind me. I had about a car or two off the line on him and by the time I hit 100 he was still htere, not too bad I thought.

Re: Modded WRX

probably the stock STi turbo a VF43 lots of WRX guys swamp STi parts in since they can be had cheap if you get them used.

Re: Modded WRX

Speaking of WRX's, as of last a high school friend of mine is leaning towards buying one. He is too cheap buy a STi  He is a tuning idiot; he just pays mechanics to bolts ons parts. What type of potential do they have with bolt ons? Another friend of mine told me he wants to take down my Syclone :rotf: I am not too worried, just curious.

Re: Modded WRX

The transimission in the WRX sucks and it won't take much, they break gears stock.
If he wants to hang with the Syclone he will need an STi.
If I was him I'd track down a used 2005 STi long before I bought a new WRX.
I have autocrossed in seriously modded WRX's and the stock STi drives much better and feels a lot faster.

The WRX and the STi are different animals all together the only thing that is the same is they kind of look alike everything else is better in the STi.

If you friend wants an AWD car to bolt parts on and beat a Syclone he should look at the EVO or STi because a WRX isn't go to do it and unless he babies it without atleast getting the STi transmission, axles and diffs if won't last long.

the Stock STi is quick enough to beat a stock Syclone in the 1/4 if you drive it right.

as far as potential of the WRX you can probably add around 100hp with bolt ons
the one I co-drove was around 300whp and lasted about a half a season of autocross before the transmission broke.

for comparison the STi can get to around 450whp with a good tune and last forever at that power level and the EVO can get in to the 11's with bolt ons and over 500whp with the EVO YMMV sometimes they last and sometimes they don't

He is very stubborn, I tried to tell him the STi is a much better car, but he doesn't listen. He looks at the $7-8K difference and would rather put the money into the WRX. He doesn't like the STi wing. Ironically his other choice is a GTO which the same price rang as a STi

My truck isn't stock, so I am not too worried about him beating me with a WRX or even a STi. I would start getting a little worried about an Evo though,..he doesn't like those and I am not going to give him idea's on what will give me problems.

Nope, Ventura. in between L.A. and Santa Barbara. Beach comunity. Yah his evo was maybe the fastest thing I've come up against so far. Evo's can do low 11's with not to much work, so watch those suckers.
Well when my crossover is fixed I'll be back at the races on Sat nights. Let me know If your ever down this way.
Heck maybe we can have a Socalsyty meet in Ventura on sat night. That would be cool to see all the sy's at the street races, and ty's of course.

I live in the city of ventura, near the gov center. I think it takes about 2 hours or less to get here from SD. Same cars out here too, but with some american muscle stuff. Couple of low riders too. Did you see the Ninja 636 vs Deanzsyclone video? That's my favorite one. I'ts in the kills section.

If you want to rape him tell him to get the GTO that car is a joke  my neighbor has one that he thought was "so bad ass"and kept talking shit about my "rice burner" until I blew his doors off with the STi from a dig and from a roll so many times that he gave up and stopped asking for more...no more smack talk from him about his "bad ass GTO"

Tell your friend to head to a local autocross and ask for rides in both.
I'm sure there will be both stock STi's and WRX's that the owners thought they could put 7-8k into and be quicker than the STi.
there always is, he'll see the WRX's are not quicker than the stock STi in any aspect.

and he'll be looking at 6k just to get the transmission in there and about another 3k to get the DCCD working

STi has a DCCD, better diffs, better traction control, better transmission, better long block, better brakes, better wheels, better tires.

If he wants to get the WRX to the level of the STi he will spend a lot more than 7-8k and he will not have any type of warranty that the STi would have.

To each his own but, if you can afford the STi and you get a WRX thinking your going to mod it in to an STi or Syclone killer you'll find you wasted your time and effort.

FWIW
Most people never come across a built STi..... this one is nice and will run this tune all day and without a hickup

Re: Modded WRX

I agree with almost everything allwheeldriven has said. The stock WRX trans can't hold more than 325-350awhp so everyone switchs to the better STI trans (which is 6K). The stock WRX trannies just really suck, the car won't be reliable if he plans to race it even on close to stock power levels. My cousin had a VF22, front mount, and supporting mods and was at 330awhp. He refused to do anymore mods cuz he knew his trans wouldn't take anymore. After I took him for a launch in my Sy with just a homemade intake and chip, he refused to race me. He had beaten quite a few STI's, only lightly modded though. The EVO's really are a different animal, they are more of a race car while the STI's are more of the DD.

Allwheeldriven: tell your neighbor to get a cam and full exhaust and he'll be at 400rwhp and then try to race him. Stock for stock you should be real close, it's really hard to launch the GTO's though. Is it an 05-06 or and 04?
