The G1 is the straight chip adapter. Allows you to dock a ribbon cable header (Ostrich, etc...) or eprom into it. Universally, the most widely used adapter when emulating.
The G3 is the multi-chip version of the G1. Allows you to dock a 27C2001, 27C020, 29F040B, etc... into it, thus giving you the ability to swap between (up to) 16 different bins (or tunes). That's what the rotary switch is for on the adapter (and also the remote switcher).
