Map sensor is no dice...

Hi all,

It's me again :( ... Well, guess what? I replaced my map sensor with a new one(my dad got home with a new one :p ) hoping to solve my problem once and for all. I changed it and the truck wouldn't start :drinking: . I tried a couple of times and wwaala!! It started but, it was hesitating and fighting to stay alive while the RPMs where dropping till it eventually died :x

I started it again and this time the truck was idling at 1,200-1,500 RPMs  I let the truck rest at idle and when I got back it was idling somewhere in the 900-800 range. I took it for a spin and it felt like normal while I was getting it out of my garage. Well, I thought I had solved my problem. The truck was running fine till I got it into boost. It wouldn't build more than 5 PSI and it felt like it was triyng really hard to build boost.

So, I put her back in the garage because it was raining 0X and I couldn't work under the rain. I took her out today and it wouldn't start. It started and I would move 5 feet and it would die I had to start it like 5 times just to get to the front of my house :x  well, I decided to change my plugs so I lifted the truck, got the front wheels out. I noticed that the plugs where all tight, and the wires were ok. I looked carefully at the plugs and noticed that the white area(creamic) at the begining of the plug was black in all of them.

I was triyng to get them out, but it started raining and I couldn't. Could that be my problem???

Thanx.

A high idle is a vacuum leak 99% of the time. The leak tricks the engine into thinking that the throttle is open farther than it is so to speak.
Do the bicycle inner tube test and check for leaks. Air coming from the shaft that goes through the throttle body is normal. All others are not.

By the way, any codes stored? If your dad went to Autozone to get a MAP sensor, they only have a 1 Bar sensor. I tried to get one a couple years ago from them and the terminal showed a part number for the Typhoon. Just to be safe, I had them look up a 4x4 S-10 same year.....same number. Not

Ed,

Thanx I'll start checking all of the above. My dad bought the map sensor at a GM dealership. It's the same that the truck had before.

Blake,

Thanx for the advice too. I'll do the bycicle tube test tomorrow!

Thanx for the help!

Re: Map sensor is no dice...

Hi, are you 100% sure the dealership sold your dad the right MAP? If so, put your old MAP back and see if the problem is still the same. If you have the same problem with old and new MAP, the problem is some where else. If the problem changes or goes away with your old MAP, you got a bad new MAP. Most likely the wrong one, like a 1 bar MAP.

Don't be so sure that just cuz you got it from the dealer that its the right one. I think the 2 bar has an orange seal where the male connector goes into it. The dealer tried to give me a one bar but I told them how it was. Then I called about 8 parts stores before I found the right one.

What part # is on your MAP sensor(both the new one and old one)?

3 Bar should be part #16040749 I believe.

Thanx for the replies,

The map sensors had diferent part #'s, therefore I went to the dealership again and they told me that the part # had changed and that the map sensor that I had was the correct one.

They showed me the monitor and they were right. Now I'm getting depserate!

Just got off the phone with my GM parts guy at the local dealership here. I call this guy when I need something from the dealer as he knows what sytys are as well as GNs and TTAs(took me weeks to train him).

3 bar (TTA) has two part #s listed. First one is 16040749 which is stamped on the sensor itself. Second part # is 1223861. Either one of these #s should be a 3 bar.

2 bar for syty part # is 16254539 with the number 9886 stamped on the sensor.

HTH you figure out which one you have.
