Manifolds need new gaskets

I guess my engine builder didn't make them flush against the engine for whatever reason... he is out of the country so I can't bug him on why.


I bought the metal gaskets from RPM.
Can I just back up the bolts and squeeze them into place?
Or is there anything special to get them in there?

factory didnt use gaskets if both surfaces are true they arent needed

I went with RPMs Stainless gaskets. Is the motor still out of the truck or is it in the truck? If its in the truck its not that simple. You need to take the crossover pipe off so you can separate the two manifolds. Make sure both surfaces are perfectly clean. I know the trucks did not come with gaskets but that means nothing to me. You can always improve over stock.
I think you should get some new stainless bolts. They are metric with 1.5 threads. I can’t remember what size they are off the top of my head. Make sure you use a torque wrench and set each bolt to 25 ft/lbs. If you get the manifolds to tight they could crack under heat.
Also when the manifolds are cold it’s very hard to thread the two end bolts back in. Make sure the first bolt goes in the middle and work your way out. You do the outer most bolt with the ports that are closest together. Then to the other side outer most bolt. Once you have those three bolts in your golden the rest of the way. Repeat for the other side.
Make sense?
How do you know they are not flush with the block? If they are not leaking leave it. Do the old water and soap with a spray bottle trick on the manifolds with the engine runnig cold to check for leaks.

x2. If the manifolds are trued up (machine shop can handle this easy), all you need is some high-heat RTV.

I replaced mine in the rig by loosening bolts and sliding old ones out and new ones in. It was not by any stretch of the imagination an easy thing, well the drivers side was fairly simple, the passenger side was a royal pain in the ass.
