M3 BMW vs Typhoon

My friend just landed a job with Medronic in the cities so hes looking for a car now. Hes into performance/racing. He wants a BMW M3 really bad. He has always liked Typhoons aslo. He said the Typhoon does not provide the driving experience hes looking for. Im trying to convince him to get a phoon. This is what he wrote to me.....

bmw is NOT over priced OR over rated!!! THE M3 IS THE PERFECT CAR...HANDS DOWN...I WOULD GO AS FAR AS SAY IT WAS DIVINE. i have talked to so may ppl that have had bmws and its hard for them to even consider driving anything else. Even joshs bmw which is a base line sedan is amazing its 13 years old shifts like a dream and has an amazingly flat torque curve. IF I WANTED STRAIGHT LINE SPEED for dirt cheap AND NO FRILLS I WOULD TAKE THE 1JZ AND PUT THREE WHEELS ONE IT AND RUN -4 SECONDS IN THE QUARTER MILE with a cowboy hat on or i would by a 5.0 foxbody mustang throw some peanuts at itand jerk myself off to 9 second quartermiles. The bmw is an engineering marvel and an artist wonder....the only way it can be properly described by humans is as an ultimate driving machine.

This is what I wrote back to him.....

You pull up to a stop light. The person next to you laughs and revs his over priced piece of machinery. You look over with a smirk on your face. You hold the brake hard with your foot. You press the gas pedal with the other. As you start to hear a spooling sound it's overcome by your opponents RPM’s banging off the rev limiter. You wait at the light like a cat ready to pounce. You heart rate rises as your chassis starts to slide and twist from over 400 foot pounds of torque. The light turns green and as if the devil himself has just risen from the depths and pushes you to 60 mph in blistering 4 seconds. As you look over there is no one in sight. The closest headlights are six car lengths behind you.
You slow for the next light. He person in the other lane won’t even pull up next to you. The last thing they see as you turn off. Typhoon.....

Can anyone else think of some good reasons not the buy an M3. I dont want to hear about how he should just buy an M3 instead and save on the headaces of a Typhoon :rotf:

Cant buy "Made in China" parts for a German car. If the roads are bad where he plans to drive it, he will soon find out that in order for the M3 to handle the way it does, there is a sacrifice to made. The operating costs are roughly the same (Synthetic oil, premium fuel), but things get really, really expensive if something needs to be replaced (an EGR valve for a lowly '94 Audi Cabriolet is $395).

What type of an m3(E-What)? I know you don't want to hear it but he is making the right choice.

If he doesn't want a syty to begin with, he surely is't going to put up with the bs associated with owning one. Plus, M3s are tits, no matter which model.

I'd take an m3 over a syty any day as a daily. But at the same time I wouldn't look at a BMW unless i could pay for the car 1.5-2 times. Because unless you get a new one with a warranty that's what you'll be paying in maintenence. I'd look for a c5 z06.

Re: M3 BMW vs Typhoon

I have a 98 M3 sedan, Great Car I love it as my daily. Very dependable car. I'm even thinking of buying a 09 M3 4dr sedan but it only has 416 HP on V8 to go high 13's in the 1/4....???? Can never compare to the performance of SY or TY. And if you want to add performance to your M3 it's going to be a lot of $$$$$. The drawback is regular maintenance, it's expensive. Better be ready to drop $$$$$.

Front or Rear Brakes: you have to replace rotors, pads and sensors every time. $600. dls/per set.
Oil change comes free for 4yrs. But after that your looking at $100-150 depending where you service it.
I just had to replace the cats on it....$1,200 dls

1JZ isn't cheap and it ain't the fastest. 5.SL0 foxbody's we eat them for lunch. LOL....

I worked for a BMW dealership for a year. Cats are a normal failure item on E46 M3s, but should be covered for 8yrs/80k miles. When one fails, it was common for that same car to be in soon after to get the other one done. Also, as SYTY66, maintance is very pricy. On every Inspection I and II, valves are checked/adusted. Look to be right at 1000 per visit on those.

BMW changed their policy on replacing rotors when doing brake services. If they measure within spec, rotors won't be changed under warranty. After working there, and seeing what everything costs, I would never own a BMW without a warranty. He needs to find one with a CPO.

Also, man, your red text is the hardest to read.

if he's into road racing and cant afford a Porsche.. ;)
the m3 is the next best thing.
the m3 might not win too many street light to
street light races but on a road course they do really well.

M3, easy choice...let's be honest, the syty is fun but in today's world they are pretty crappy (and I love them). Any BMW is awesome...as the slogan goes, "once a BMW, always a BMW"...there's truly nothing like them. Again, syty is cool but there's a reason i sold my third sy for another BMW too.

Encourage him to get an M3. You'll get to enjoy the benifit of an M3 without the cost. Sure a Ty is awseome on a boost launch 0-60 but an M3 is awseome through the turns and 0-150 with that sweet 8,000 RPM V8 Whine. That's my 2 cents.

Most BMW guys don't or can't work on their own vehicles. Unless you have someone close you trust, you almost have to do you own work to these wonderful vehicles that are approaching 20 years of age.

Re: M3 BMW vs Typhoon

M3 all the way. I love the Sy/Ty platform as much as anyone, but there really isn't a good comparison between the Sy/Ty platform and the BMW 3-Series chassis.

The Sy/Ty goes fast in a straight line for a short period very well. Everything else it just does, not well, just does.

The BMW turns, drives, stops, goes, and rides better than the Sy/Ty. It also has a feel about it that the GM chassis just can't compete with. An easy test is the door slam test. Go slam the door of eitehr. The GM will rattle, ping/pop, and maybe drop a part on the ground. The BMW will have a nice solid thud, and thats it. Basically it's a build quality debate more than anything, and GM simply couldn't compete until the last couple of years!

Re: M3 BMW vs Typhoon

they are better, and he will pay more, but our trucks require a lot of maintenance too andf if you dont your own work or know someone who you can trust then your screwed there too. An M3 is more of a pleasure to drive, fun, great in corners, and the most important thing.......aftermarket support. I think the last part says it all.

Re: M3 BMW vs Typhoon

I do all my own wrenching and have over $70K invested into the Sy in 8 years. I'd say get the M3 for what he's looking to do. Our trucks are made to own the stoplight...not road race.

I would say that if he doesn't really want a TY and you have to talk him in to it then let him get the beamer. I personally never understood the BMW craze. I have been in and driven several and they never impressed me as much. Feels like driving my dads Altima:lol: And on another note, I never once, have lost a race to one, or even close. Even from a roll.

E36 M3 sedan, and E30 M3's are fantastic.

i have owned a slew of fine european cars, but the ty is just "cooler" IMO.

the M3 is a better buy, but who cares about money when yer looking at a bimmer/syty

Re: M3 BMW vs Typhoon

I can actually feel where he is coming from. I was a BMW car club member for 10 years. I have had a few different types ranging from a 5 series to a 3series convertible to m3's and i have to say they are great cars. It all depends what you want to do with them. See for me living in new york i always had a winter car becasue the BMW's all suck in the snow unless you get the IX which is all wheel drive. I guess after so much time enjoying them i decided to take another route in my life and get into a typhoon which i always loved as my fun toy and a brand new subaru legacy fully loaded which is all wheel drive so no matter what type of weather we get i will have no thing to worry about.

Let him get what he wants becasue then if he listens to you and gets into a TY and has problems you will be the first person he calls and do you really want that?? :p

Simple... get both. I have several of both. Only way to go, and you get the best of both worlds!

Altima akin to a BMW.....you need to stop driving 1982 325 models then....geez....that's the nuttiest thing I have ever heard. altima......hahaha!!! :rotf:
