LS1 Typhoon

I am the new owner of an original 1993 Typhoon that was converted to an LS1/Typhoon. The LS1 is from a 1997 Corvette. There are some things that seem to be different from the pictures of your Ty's (other than the engine of course). Namely:
  • No keyless entry
  • No rear air shocks
  • The rear end sits lower than the front
  • No wing on the rear tailgate window

Some of these May be optional, please let me know if so. If they are missing from the standard, let me know that too. The vin ends with 509.
Thanks
Eddy

Re: LS1 Typhoon

Have you confirmed that the truck doesn't have keyless entry or are the key fobs just missing?
The air ride was probably removed either to lower the truck or because it was faulty. Does your truck have lowering blocks installed? It is easier to lower the rear more than the front which may be the reason for the "ass dragging" look.
The rear wing was not an option on the Typhoon so it shouldn't have one.

Remove the console and near the back side of it you should see a little black box that appears to have no real purpose in life. If that is there you have keyless entry. You can buy new key fobs. If that box is not there but the pig tail is there you can get the keyless entry box from a junk yard, I grabbed 5 of them for $15 dollars just to ensure I had a good one and then get the key fobs and program them.

Re: LS1 Typhoon

Hi, welcome to the forum, 1997, 1998, were the first years for the ls1, made a lot of basic changes in 99 and more in 02. your engine has the perimeter valve covers, which leak, and the small cam galley that proved to cause oiling problems if ran at high rpm, they went to center bolt valve covers and larger oil galley in 99 and went with the ls6 improved block webbing in 02. If you plan on more mods, get an 02 or later short block and heads
Post some pics of your truck and describe your setup, there is a lot more info and parts available now than in 04 when I first did mine.

Welcome to the forum. Your answers have been answered, but would be nice to see pics of your swap. What transmission is in it? Also exhaust pics and what oil pan set up are you using. How do you like it so far?

Re: LS1 Typhoon

where are you located? tough to tell if your license plate is Maryland or something out west.

Is your ls1 turbo'd? Or na? Have any pics of the engine bay?

Re: LS1 Typhoon

Nice to see another white ty. Looks like Washington plates, but I could be wrong.

Re: LS1 Typhoon

Yes, AWD still intact. Previous owner left pretty much everything the same except for A/C.
A/C is one of the things I'll need to install.

There are several easier ways to confirm RKE.

AX3 on the SPID decal in glove box.
The presence of a terminal in the lower row, 3rd from left, position of the ALDL. Has a purple wire. (RKE Programming).
Look at front edge of carpet, just inboard of accelerator pedal for a wire harness that goes straight up firewall to a cross-body harness at the base of the windshield. This is the RKE harness.

EDIT: This above is true for a 1992 Typhoon.
93 Typhoon the RKE harness goes under the drivers seat, and up the firewall alongside the other wiring. There is a 6-pin connector that interfaces the cross-body harness to the IP harness. The 92 does not have this connector.

To determine if resurrecting the RKE is going to be easy or difficult, see if the system is active or not. Often the RKE is disabled during an alarm install. If it's active, find the remote fobs, program them, and yer set.

Jumper the top left, to the bottom 3rd from left (purple wire) cavity of ALDL. After a few seconds, the door locks will cycle, and the hatch will pop. If this happens, it's ready to use. If nothing happens, there are quite a few threads on here regarding RKE.

Use "RKE" as the keyword in Advanced Search.

What is AX3? Also, SPID?
Sorry I'm a newbie. If you have a glossary somewhere, LMK.

Re: LS1 Typhoon

SPID is the Service Parts Identification Decal. It lists all the Regular Production Options (RPO's) that were included in the build of the vehicle. It is located in the glove box of SyTy's and other S/T series of the era. "AX3" is the RPO for RKE, and should be on the SPID. GM RPO's are always 3 characters, usually beginning with a letter. If the RPO begins with a digit, it is usually a color-code. Like 18I is charcoal Interior color.

How's ^^that ^^ for acronym-overload? :D Sounds like I work for NASA. They actually have a course for new outside contractors and employees that teach the acronyms. NASA-speak is like a foreign language. If you're not fluent in it, but others in a conversation are, they may as well be speaking Greek.

I don't know of a glossary for SyTy.net. But what is "LMK"? JK, of course.

HTH.

(This was fun).

Dave

It isn't just NASA that can speak in acronyms. All branches of the DOD have conversations in them. You should hear our morning maintenance meetings on Fighter planes. Those usually last an hour or so, and a good portion are acronym soup.

Re: LS1 Typhoon

Does anyone know where the oiil pressure sensor is on the LS1? From the ls1tech it looks like it is close to the rear in the middle (from the drawing). The gage doesn't work on my Typhoon, so I'm trying to trace it down.
Thanks,
Eddy

Its been awhile, but I believe It's right at the back near the firewall, just below the intake manifold, a real pain to get at and remove.
Prices may vary a lot around $100-$120. but they should have come down.
Of course its easier to remove with the correct tools/Engine in out of the engine bay :D.

When all else fails.....ask DAVE :rotf:

Re: LS1 Typhoon

It's at the back of the manifold, drivers side, yes a pain to get to, at least it's not your camshaft position sensor so you don't have to remove the intake to get it out. That one is a bitch with the engine in .
