low oil pressure problem

Anyone who can help me: I checked the dipstick on my Typhoon, and I was about a quart low on oil. I put a quart in. I drove around the rest of that day, and the next day, I realized I had forgotten to put the cap back on the reservoir where you dump the oil when the oil gauge was at zero and the "check gauges" light blinking. I opened up the hood, saw the cap sitting off to the side, put it back on, and after a few minutes, the oil guage went back up to normal. Now, after already driving some, when I start it up again, the oil gauge sits at zero for a few minutes and then jumps back up to normal for the rest of the driving. When I'm driving, it will sit at about 3/4, and when I'm sitting at a stop light, it will go down to about 1/2. I checked the oil again, and it is at the top of the "operating range" on the dipstick. The engine is not making any strange or unusual sounds. I'm hoping that the gauge is just a little off because I drove around for a day with the oil cap off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
