looking for ideas...won't idle right

just got my Syclone out of storage. All factory stock, 50K on motor, new vacuum kit a couple years ago, new plugs, wires, cap & rotor 5 years ago (10K miles). Started right up but refused to idle. noticed volt gauge was in the neg range. Diagnosed as bad alternator. Replaced alternator which was the original but still won't idle right. Replaced cap & rotor again. No change...looking for ideas. Think it's gotta be something simple as truck never ran better last fall BTW, I use fuel stabilizer and always keep it full....any help appreciaited

Is it idling rough...or conking out completely (or both)? You're positive the spark wires are on correctly?

Re: looking for ideas...won't idle right

Since the alternator, cap & rotor were replaced it will fast idle ONLY and immediately dies when it come off fast idle Runs perfect at fast idle 1500 rpm or so. Wires are on correctly.. Voltage is now normal. Thinking now that the alternator needed replacing but that was only part of the problem.....

Make sure you are getting proper voltage now with the new Alt. I'd be looking at the IAC next. Its not really active off idle but crucial for it to idle normally. May need to just relearn, or may need a clean up or replacment. HTH

I was thinking it might be a stuck injector or two since it's been awhile since it's been run.

Unlikely if it will run correctly just off idle. Do the IAC first. Might be a vac leak also. Look at the line to the PCV valve off the back of the TB, it's well hidden. Also there is a separate little cover there, It has to secure as well.

Sticking IAC seems to be the consensus - I will inspect (wiggle) all the connections and clean/replace as needed. Thanks very much to all and I will report back....if it ever stops raining and warms up here in NH there's still a patch of snow in my driveway

You can check the connection but to "fix" the IAC you have to remove it. There is a procedure you follow. Do a search but for now do NOT push on the pintle. (The end that's inside the TB.) You also might want to pull the TB and make sure the IAC passage is clear.

Re: looking for ideas...won't idle right

I have replaced 3 SyTy ECMs for idle control problems. In all 3 instances, a new ECM fixed the stalling or high idle. I've never fixed an idle problem by replacing the IAC. It's always been something else.

If it hasn't been ran and battery went dead while in storage, computer needs to relearn fuel curve 20-30 minutes of normal driving. I would also check the ECM pig tails for corrosion build up. Check for vacuum leaks-especially that hose by the distributor cap on the plenum. I would also replace the fuel filter.

So it was the distribbutor...only clue was the condition of the cap & rotor which was replaced first,,,,,,I haven't seen the old one but was just told "it isn't pretty". Anybody had similar experience? It never threw a code....Can't wait to see the bill....Brian

I'll tell you soon, I'm having an idle problem too, I'm glad I have extra parts laying around and not spending money on new ones. Distributor is next to try. I tried IAC, TPS, ECM, Alternator, did vac lines(then needed to be done anyways) to no avail. Runs great going down the road, but at idle it just shuts off. No codes for me either.

Another thing to think about is the gear on the bottom of the distributor. I just replaced my whole distributor because the teeth were wearing down.
