Re: Looking at moving to PA area...
Yeah, you don't want to live IN Reading unless you're a drug dealer, then it's pretty convenient for you... Otherwise, the Reading area is really a decent place to be. Housing - especially north and west of town - is still rather cheap compared to bigger cities, NJ, etc, and the area was just on "Today" (the nat'l morning show) as one of the top 5 places to move to in the country. They're trying to clean up the city and are making progress, but they still have a ways to go. Conversely, I live 10 minutes outside of town and don't even lock my house/garage - the trouble stays in town.
We have all kinds of shopping in the area, we're 45 mins from HersheyPark and DorneyPark if you have kids, we have a good ECHL hockey team (Royals), arena football team (Express), new minor league basketball team (Railers), and the Reading Phillies always lead the league in attendance. (We've been renamed "Baseballtown". Really.)
You're less than an hour to Philly/Allentown/Lancaster/Harrisburg, 2 hrs to Baltimore or the Jersey shore, less than 3 hrs to NYC. And the Poconos are a bit over an hour if you're a skier/snowboarder. There are a LOT of people moving here to commute to Philly because of our real estate market - a house in Berks County (where Reading is) costs almost half as much as a similar house in Montgomery of Chester counties which are closer to Philly. Houses in Schuylkill County (NW of Berks) are even cheaper.
There's a lot of natural beauty in the area as well, and a huge man-made lake (flood control for Philly) with a beach, bike trails, boating, etc. You can find most anything you want to find in the Reading area - do a Wiki search on Reading if you haven't already.
Let me know if I can do anything for you - be nice to have another local SyTy!
