little throttle response

Hello all, I'm reaching out again for assistance in diagnosing an issue my Ty started having. The problem is it seems no matter how much throttle I give it, it does not want to move over 3K RPM. This started after a spirited blast heading into my subdivision. Truck was pulling strong (maybe an 1/8 mile), then just cut out. It did not shut off, or make any strange noises or feel like I hurt something. I get back on the throttle to just drive it home and it just does not want to accelerate no matter how much gas it give. This was maybe a month ago. Tonight with Sean Krupa's assistance to monitor on the laptop. TPS shows 95-97% from the gas pedal...100% at the throttle body. Full throttle while driving around 20 barely speeds up the truck. Tune looks good in DM. We adjusted the throttle cable, pulled the ECM B fuse and reinstalled after abut a minute, and even replaced the TPS with off a spare TB I had laying around. We also checked the vac lines and just checked everything over looking for anything loose or disconnected.Took it back out and same thing.

Thanks to Sean for all his time and help with my Ty! I'm sure he'll post up if I miss anything.

Any recommendations as always would be greatly appreciated!!

possible catalytic converter.....shot in the dark I know....but food for thought...good luck

Plugged/collapsed air filter or? I didn't see boost mentioned. Does it build boost? Watch Boost/vac on DM. What happens? Turbo froze? What does it sound like when you try to rev it in neutral? Can you post the DM?

Stock inter cooler? Did something happen there?

If the motor revs free in neutral but won't drive the truck under load (but stays smooth running) something is keeping it from getting air/fuel. If the motor itself is mechanically sound then I suspect it's either intake or exhaust.

Cruising around the neighborhood with DM running, it runs just fine, until about 50%+ throttle. It's like it doesn't know what to do next and bogs down a bit. Steve had his foot to the floor goin 20mph and 3,000 rpms and barely moved beyond that speed.

Reving the truck from the Throttle body seems to rev fine. Cables look and feel fine as well. Can't really hear the Turbo much with the stock intake on it. Couldn't build boost due to the Throttle issue and bogging down. Didn't think about the Turbo bein froze.

I just never heard of this issue and was shocked when I saw his Foot at WOT and the truck barely wanted to move about 20-30mph and 3,000+ RPMS. Below lets say, 30% Throttle you can just cruise around town.

Re: little throttle response

I can check the air filter, it's a K&N filter in the stocker air box. As Sean mentioned it won't get into boost...I can't get to 30 mph. As for the IC system, stock upper, hard line delete, hot wired Johnson, and DutchTy lower. Check my sig for the rest of my mods. I do have a bit of a coolant leak somewhere, but always check levels of both systems prior to driving. Last time we ran DM after code59 install, we had several runs up to 100 mph, and IAT were climbing to 115-120 after the last runs. Truck has maybe 50 miles after that. The only other thing Sean mentioned was maybe my MAP sensor, and I have a another from my gauge I can put in to test, but that was new when we did the code 59

Re: little throttle response

If I understand the motor WILL rev above 3k when in park but not going down the road. Take the turbo to IC hose off and see what happens. Or remove the IC to TB hose to eliminate that piece as well and then see what happens. If the motor revs to 3k and just won't go any further and is still running smooth, ie not missing or backfiring, the something is preventing air from getting to the motor. Not building boost might be a clue.

Re: little throttle response

Stock tune. I will pullt it off this weekend and check the turbo. The K & N was dirty, so I cleaned it and its drying. As for FP...not sure we were paying attention to that. Sean?

Re: little throttle response

It sounds to me like your turbo locked up.. Have you grabbed the wheel and made sure you can spin it? If you can have you verified that there isn't a ton of play and that its not binding up(hitting the wall) in the turbo?

Re: little throttle response

Turbo spins fine, no damaged fins, no missing chunks outta the crossover. Cleaned and re-oiled the k&n filter. Did not get a chance to drive it yet. Next up map?

Re: little throttle response

Have you watched the throttle body to see if its opening all the way when someone else goes 100% throttle from the cab?

If it revs fine by blipping the throttle body by hand, but not by gas pedal...sounds like your cable is doing something funky.

Hi Mike, since I'm still having trouble posting I sent him a PM asking just this. IE testing the throttle cable. Hopefully he can test it soon.

Re: little throttle response

We did check the throttle cable. Sean watched as I revved it using the pedal, then he moved it at the throttle body. We checked for slack in the cables too. We have not removed the IC to TB hose to look and watch the blades tho.

Re: little throttle response

Nope, not the floor mat. Any other ideas to check? Up next is switch map, and re-check fuel pressure

Re: little throttle response

What's weird here, if I understand, is that the acts as if it's being throttled yet continues to run smooth. No missing, no codes, etc. Almost as if it had a governor. If it was fuel pressure you'd think it run like crap. If it was the MAP you'd think it would throw a code. Any luck posting a DM?

Please don't take this wrong but check the throttle cable this way: With engine off and two people floor the throttle and have the second person make sure you're actually getting full throttle.

Re: little throttle response

This ones quite a mystery. I've been trying to think of something helpful I could offer. Don W hits it on the head, its fine below 3000, if it was some issue, sensor or FP, it would show below too. The only thing that comes to mind is a similar situation, we had a customer come by with a Typhoon with the same condition, ran great, they were driving it daily, but no boost and after 3500, it fell on its face. Below, ran perfect, no codes, nothing on DM or TP5. Starting to look at turbo, ic and TB and ended up finding that the shaft of the turbo broke, and it was sitting over the exhaust outlet. So when the pressure increased, above 3500, the blockage caused it to bog and not go any faster, etc. Come to find out the turbo oil feed got clogged, shaft broke. Turbo swap later, and it was good to go. Sorry for the long story, just hoping it could help in some way.
