Launch question

Stab it and steer it
Maybe this is not new to anyone but me but I have discovered this year that if I launch "soft", that is, say, 1500 RPM, little boost, that I get BETTER times. If I launch harder it seems to result in nothing more than rear wheel spin and slower times. For example, last night, soft launch: 60' 1.774, 1000' 11.02, 1/4 13.335 @ 98

This seemed to happen with all the work I've been doing to pass smog. (Different thread.)

So until I get my Battle Bars and maybe some street slicks I'm going with soft launches.

Re: Launch question

It also depends on how modded it is. I dont think the same rule will apply to a stocker.

Re: Launch question

OK, 1500 +/- a bit RPM, boost @"0" on the gauge. Meaning no boost no vacuum. Once I start building measurable boost it goes to tire spin. The more I boost the more I spin, enough to go sideways at, say, 5# and beyond. It may be my tires. Michelin Pilot XGT V4 P245/50 R16 Gorgeous tire but maybe not for the drags. But it's what the truck came with.

Like I said Battle Bars and street slicks.

The rear tire spins while building boost at the line or it spin when you launch it? I had those same Michelin Pilot on my Sy. They weren't the greatest DR tire. The best I ever got was 1.77 or 1.78 with many 1.80's...

Re: Launch question

I launched mine at @10-12 psi at the track and got a 1.83 60ft time. Then a left at lower boost and got a 1.9 60ft. No wheel spin at the track. Every now and then it will break them loose on the street. But IMO I would rather leave the line in boost, then lag it off the line and have to play catch up.

Re: Launch question

Sounds liek your AWD isnt working. I launch at 17psi easily with 0-very little wheel spin. Even when you hear them chirping or spinning Im still launching hard. IMO, you shouldnt be able to spin sideways with a working AWD ON A TRUCK LIKE YOURS.

Correct. He is at lower altitude ( = more power), but he shouldn't be spinning that much.

Re: Launch question

I was wondering the same thing. How does one actually check AWD function. I can jack all 4 and watch them turn but is the front really getting a torque? I could always jack just the rear and see if it will drive off the jack.:rotf:

Re: Launch question

I dont spin them hard at all. I haze them for about 5 feet at the most. Even on a full boost launch. But at the track I cant even break them loose on a full boost.

You are testing it when you are at the track. It failed.

Ditto, in a way. On the street anything over 6lbs I would spin for a few feet. At the track, 15lb launch's it wouldnt spin at all, but if I went over that it would spin some.

Re: Launch question

Hmm, maybe its a SY thing. Even when I cut a 1.7 60' I dont get that. Maybe I will though someday. My friends TY breaks loose super bad and goes all over the place but the funny thing is that his truck is much slwoer than mine. I used to use the Mirada something or other tires 255/50/16 on my stock wheels and now I use Sumitomo 285/35/18 rear and 275/45/17 front on my Z06 wheels. Both have as god of traction as the other.
