L35s

Getting set to put my heads on the block. Casting 8181 L35s.

Both heads are identical, except. One is stamped with a "F034" and the other with a "F064".

Which head is for which bank??

Also on the heads, in the area of the coolant temp sensor. There are 2 ports, not just one, like on the stockers.

The coolant temp sensor is mounted in the bottom port, like the stockers, with a plug on the opposite head. But there is 1 more threaded port above where the sensor is located. What is this for?

Re: L35s

I dont think it matters which head goes on which bank.

do they have the same casting #?
Should be an 8 digit GM part # in the oil valley in the rocker area.

I put a plug in the extra hole on the pass side head.
Use BRASS not steel, or it will rust in place.
the second hole above the sensor is not in a coolant jacket is it?
My truck is not here to look at.

Again I don't think its anything to worry about.

Re: L35s

Do these have the heart shaped chambers like the newer vortecs? My buddy has a complete bad motor with these heads on it and was just wondering if they were worth my time.

Re: L35s

Nope, almost the same CC design as our LB4s.
Slightly better flow with screw in rocker studs.

Unless you have to pass emissions I would go for the Vortecs.
I went L35 due to emissions and now I am exempt so I am kicking my self over and over... and over.

I will go vortecs when I rebuild fo sho!

Re: L35s

those numbers are casting dates. June 3rd 1994 and June 6th 1994. Doesnt matter which bank you put the heads on. The upper port is for another application. Just plug it and use the holes that are in service on the stockers

Re: L35s

i think the second hole is a knock sensor. whats the new obsession with l35 heads? i see like three or four new threads about them?

second hole is for a knock sensor.

on the L35's there are a ton of different places they were installed. leave you sensor where it is and just plug the extra hole with brass.

both heads are the same doesnt matter what side they go on.

they've been running strong for 3k miles. Thanks again John.

oh, and to the comment about what the big hype is about L35s. pretty much that they're bolt-on, rather then the vortecs which need intake mani work done.

Re: L35s

I would like to do L-35's myself soon, but does anyone know the differences in the 8 degree top angle or the 30 degree top angle? Does it matter?

From the vault:
<The 10077626, 14099064, 10240209 or 10238181 castings were used, but be sure to check them over carefully because there are two versions of the 10238181 and 10240209 castings with an important difference. In ’92 and ’93, they came with an 8° top angle on the intake seat and a 75° throat, but that was changed to a 30° top angle with an 80° throat in ’94. Separate the 8° heads from the 30° heads and use them only on the ’92 and ’93 engines>

Re: L35s

if i was to have to spend the money on new head gaskets, head bolts, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets and such, i'd figure i might as well pony up the rest to do vortecs. its what 250 for the intake work, and you can redrill the heads yourself. you get better flow, better rockers and the heads cost the same. but if there is a big demand for the l35 heads i think i know where several sets are at in the salvage yard.

Re: L35s

Just a quick question.

Are all the L35 heads the high swirl type intake port?
I was under the impression that the L35's had a bigger intake port window & are not the high swirl design like the stock LB4's.
